EBRSO: Fifth grader brings gun to Capitol Elementary EBRSO: Fifth grader brings gun to Capitol Elementary | Advocate staff report April 06, 2014 Comments A Capitol Elementary fifth grader is in custody after deputies found an unloaded stolen handgun in the student’s backpack on Friday afternoon. School officials called authorities about 3:30 p.m. Thursday after a student told an administrator that a classmate had a gun, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. A deputy responded to the school on Gus Young Avenue and found a .45 caliber unloaded handgun unloaded inside a 10-year-old student’s backpack, Hicks said. The student told investigators he found the gun, which didn’t have a clip, at home, Hicks said. Authorities will book the child into the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center on a count of illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus, Hicks said. The incident remains under investigation. Deputies ask students with information about the incident to contact a school administrator or the Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-5000 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
