PORT ALLEN — The driver of a Toyota Camry died Thursday morning after crashing into an 18-wheeler making a U-turn on U.S. 190 in Port Allen, State Police said.
The 18-wheeler had been westbound but was turning to go eastbound when the Camry ran into it, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said.
Sandifer identified the driver of the Camry as Ricky Moore, 51, of Melville. The driver of the 1996 Kenwood tractor-trailer was identified as Barry Huffman, 54, of Elmwood, Kan.
Moore was eastbound, in the left hand lane, when for unknown reasons his Camry struck the rear wheels of the tractor-trailer, Sandifer said.
Even though Moore was wearing his seat belt, he sustained fatal injuries. Huffman, who also was properly restrained, was uninjured, Sandifer said.
The crash at about 7 a.m. shut down eastbound traffic on U.S. 190 for a few hours, forcing eastbound motorists to detour at La. 415. The road was reopened shortly before 9:45 a.m.
Driver impairment is not suspected for either driver at this time; however, toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
