Police: Bag with cell phones, drugs, tobacco found near jail fence in Amite

Police are investigating the discovery of a bag full of cellphones and drugs found behind one of the Tangipahoa Parish Jail’s fences Tuesday, Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona said Friday.

An officer received a call from an informant who found the bag sitting by the jail’s fence, Trabona said.

Amite police officers and Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies traveled to the scene and found the bag containing nine cellphones, four smaller bags of marijuana, five packs of a mysterious synthetic drug and a pound of smoking tobacco, Trabona said.

Authorities are not sure where the bag came from, Trabona said.

Authorities believe the cellphones were purchased in Hammond and are looking into who bought them, Trabona said.
