Senate agrees to fine fix

A clean-up measure correcting a glitch in the state’s personal financial disclosure law cleared the Louisiana Senate on Monday.

The measure, Senate Bill 134, sponsored by state Sen. Jody Amedee, R-Gonzales, passed on a 37-0 vote. It now heads to the House.

The legislation would impose a maximum $12,500 fine on those filing under Tier 1 - the category that covers major state offices where the most is required to be disclosed.

Under current law, there is no cap and a $500 a day penalty keeps mounting.

The Louisiana Board of Ethics sought the legislation, noting that all other categories of filers had a maximum fine.
