The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in a Brooklyn federal court, seeks compensations for deaths and illnesses and funding for clean water in Haiti, which was devastated by a 2010 earthquake. Scientific studies have shown that cholera was likely introduced in Haiti by U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal, where the disease is endemic. The new suit also asks the court to declare that the U.N. has no immunity. Another lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal court in October cited World Health Organization data saying cholera had sickened nearly 700,000 Haitians and killed more than 8,400 as of Dec. 23. The U.N. has defended its actions in Haiti.
