A “suspicious” fire at 2247 Kentucky St. burned through half a house Wednesday before firefighters could get it under control just before midnight, essentially making the $50,000 house a total loss, the Baton Rouge Fire Department reported.

“Although investigators have not determined a cause, they do believe this fire to be suspicious in nature,” department spokesman Curt Monte said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 11:20 p.m., deploying four pumper trucks, one ladder truck and two support vehicles. The blaze was under control by 11:53 p.m.

“Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the rear of the home engulfed in flames,” Monte said. “The fire is believed to have started in or around the wash room of the home.”
