Baker police booked Barbara Smith, 9245 Cedar Court Drive, Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on Friday on 24 counts of felony theft, an affidavit of probable cause said. The victim’s son contacted police Dec. 30 regarding several charges on his mother’s account that he said she did not make, the affidavit said. Some of the transactions go back to January 2013, the affidavit said. Among some of the transactions, Smith made 15 payments totaling $3,590.79, to AT&T; 16 payments totaling $3,119.21, Affordable Home Furniture in Baker; and 14 payments totaling $2,815.49, Royal Furniture, the affidavit said. She also made purchases at Hip Hop Fashions, for $43.60; Mercedes Benz BR, $2,712.31; and Kay Jewelers, $9,078.32, the affidavit said. During questioning, Smith said “The victim was a good lady and she felt bad for taking advantage of her” and “She had every intention of trying to pay her back but all this came down before she could get everything straight,” the affidavit said.
