One person was wounded and two people are in custody in St. James Parish after shots rang out Tuesday night in the St. James High School parking lot following a boys basketball game against parish rival Lutcher High.

St. James Parish Sheriff Willie Martin Jr. said at 10:30 p.m. that the victim was en route to University Hospital in New Orleans with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the leg and possibly another one in the abdomen, but was lucid enough to give deputies the name of the shooter.

“It put us on the trail real quick,” Martin said.

He said the shooting occurred at about 8:25 p.m. and no one else was injured.

Deputies caught up to the alleged shooter, whom Martin did not name, near his home in Convent and picked him up without incident, but they have not questioned him yet in reference to the shooting.

He said the shooting had nothing to do with the game.

“I do know that these two individuals have had some history between them,” Martin said.

The other person in custody was a person who deputies think may have been with the shooter during or after the shots were fired.

Martin said they were searching for other witnesses.

“They’re not running to us,” he said.
