Fire destroys house on North 24th Street Fire destroys house on North 24th Street Advocate staff report Jan. 08, 2014 Comments A Wednesday afternoon house fire just east of Interstate 110 near Plank Road destroyed the residence but didn’t injure anyone. Investigators haven’t yet determined what sparked the blaze in the 1700 block of North 24th Street, which began shortly after noon Thursday, said Curt Monte, a Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman. Firefighters arrived about 12:20 p.m. to find the home mostly engulfed in flames, Monte said. The house is considered a loss. The rear portion of the house was damaged heavily by the fire, and the rest of the home suffered considerable smoke and water damage. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to control the blaze, Monte said. A woman and her elderly mother lived in the home. The daughter was outside when she first noticed the flames, and her mother wasn’t home during the fire, Monte said. The American Red Cross was called to assist the two women, Monte said.
