Power issues force closures at Hammond High, Hammond Eastside Power issues force closures at Hammond High, Hammond Eastside Advocate staff report Jan. 07, 2014 Comments Power problems prompted Tangipahoa Parish school system officials to cancel classes at Hammond Eastside Elementary and Hammond High Magnet Schools on Tuesday. School Superintendent Mark Kolwe said Entergy was experiencing problems delivering adequate power to the schools early Tuesday and school officials were concerned about being able to provide consistent heating to the schools. Because students were already on campus on their way there, buses will be used to return students home this morning, he said. HHMS students were to be dismissed at 9 a.m., and Hammond Eastside students will be dismissed at 10 a.m. Kolwe said parents may come earlier to pick up their children, if they so choose. Kolwe added bus drivers have been directed not to dismiss elementary students off the bus unless a parent or guardian is home to receive the child. He said he expects the power issue to be resolved later today.
