Boy, 2, critically injured in crash Boy, 2, critically injured in crash Advocate staff report Jan. 07, 2014 Comments A 2-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after being thrown from a SUV during a crash Sunday night on Airline Highway near the border of East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes, State Police said. The one-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Airline Highway, just north of La. 427, or Perkins Road, in Ascension Parish, said Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman. Jonqualya Benton, of Prairieville, was driving a 2013 Mercedes GLK 350 northbound on Airline when, for some unknown reason, the car ran off the road into a ditch, striking a driveway and overturning, Sandifer said. The impact from the crash caused the toddler to be ejected from the SUV. Investigators haven’t determined whether the child was properly restrained. The boy was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with life-threatening injuries, Sandifer said. Troopers suspect excessive speed as a factor in the crash, Sandifer said. It was unknown whether impairment played a factor, he said.
