WALKER — A Hammond man died in a Christmas Eve crash on Interstate 12 between Walker and Satsuma, a Walker Police Department spokesman said Monday.
Gregory P. Holland, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene, Capt. John Sharp said in a news release.
Officers were dispatched around 12:05 a.m. to an accident involving an 18-wheeler and a Toyota Corolla, Sharp said.
Police believe the eastbound 18-wheeler was changing lanes in an attempt to pass the Corolla, which was in the outside lane, Sharp said.
The 18-wheeler hit the left rear of the Corolla, causing the car to leave the road and roll over several times before landing at the woodline off the interstate, Sharp said.
Holland was found in the overturned Corolla, Sharp said.
The driver of the Corolla, Sandra Newcomb, 47, of Loranger, and a 6-year-old boy in the car had minor injuries and were treated at a hospital, Sharp said.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Ezra Paul Clark, 34, of Gulfport, Miss., was cited with careless operation, Sharp said. Clark was not injured.
Impairment is not considered a factor in the crash, but police took blood samples from both drivers for analysis as part of the protocol for a fatal accident, Sharp said.
