Sheriff’s Office hits the big 200

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office celebrated its 200th anniversary Friday, with the parish’s 33rd chief law officer, Sheriff Ronnie Theriot, in attendance.

St. Martin Parish was founded in 1812, the same year Louisiana became a state of the United States, with the Sheriff’s Office formed one year later, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Maj. Ginny Higgins. Theriot has been sheriff since October 2003, and the department has grown to 224 employees, including deputies, and four K-9s.
