EBR grand jury indicts man in teen’s shooting death

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged a Baton Rouge man Wednesday in the Aug. 1 fatal shooting of another man on La Annie Drive.

Reginald Pickett Jr., 20, 12254 La Margie St., Apt. 71, was indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Lezzell James, who was set to begin his sophomore year at Belaire High School.

An arrest warrant alleges Pickett shot James inside an apartment, then demanded at gunpoint that three witnesses remove the victim’s body. After the people carried James’ body outside, Pickett fired one shot in the air and told them to run, the warrant states.

Pickett faces an automatic sentence of life in prison if found guilty of second-degree murder.

The case has been assigned to state District Judge Trudy White.
