Costumed man faces DWI count
LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette man dressed as Santa’s favorite helper — Buddy the Elf — was booked into jail over the weekend on counts of drunken driving and speeding on Kaliste Saloom Road.
A Lafayette patrol officer saw Brandon Touchet early Sunday morning zooming along at 60 mph in a 40-mph zone on Kaliste Saloom, according to an arrest affidavit.
After stopping Touchet, Officer C. Broussard found Touchet, 34, had “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath as he spoke, his eyes were blood shot, his speech was slurred, and he was swaying from side to side as he stood,” the arrest affidavit says.
Touchet was arrested 3 a.m. Sunday after an alcohol breath test registered Touchet’s blood-alcohol level at 0.124 percent.
Under Louisiana law, a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or greater is considered presumptive evidence of drunken driving.
Broussard wrote that after Touchet was read his rights, he admitted he was speeding and driving drunk.
Touchet was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center and was later released.
