Curtis defeats University 32-0 to win Division II state championship

The John Curtis defense with a little help from running back Raekwon James powered the Patriots to a 32-0 victory against University in the Division II state championship game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

James, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior who rushed for 97 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries, manuevered his way through the University defense for a 37-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 6-0 lead with 3:41 left in the second quarter. The extra point kick was blocked. The play score capped a five-play, 66-yard drive.

Patriots quarterback Abby Touzet threw a middle-screen pass to James, who ran and leaped over a defender into the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown on the last play of the first half to make the score 13-0.

The Patriots increased their lead to 19-0 when quarterback Myles Washington scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Curtis running back George Moreira had a 2-yard touchdown plug with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter. Touzet threw an incompletion on the two-point conversion pass to keep the score 25-0.

Patriots running back Tyrone Chevalier scored on a 79-yard touchdown run with one minute remaining to make the score 32-0.
