SATSUMA — A pedestrian was critically injured early Tuesday after being hit by an SUV on the Interstate 12 east exit ramp at South Satsuma Road, a Walker Police Department spokesman said.
Chad Wayne Cox, 27, of Covington, was walking in the left lane of the ramp around 3:30 a.m. when he was struck by a 2006 GMC Yukon driven by Steven Michael Jones, police Capt. John Sharp said in a news release.
Jones, 37, of Baton Rouge, told police he was driving in the left lane behind an 18-wheeler when the 18-wheeler suddenly swerved to dodge Cox.
Jones tried to swerve but was unable to avoid Cox, Sharp said.
Police believe weather and poor lighting were factors in the accident. Speed, driver inattentiveness and impairment are not considered factors, though Jones submitted a routine blood sample for analysis.
Police are still trying to determine why Cox was walking on the interstate, though it’s possible Cox was trying to cross the road at the time, Sharp said.
I-12 east at Satsuma was closed for about two hours because of the accident, Sharp said.
