The East Baton Rouge Parish Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge.
Residents should enter the site from Scenic Highway at Foss Street.
The event is only for residents of the parish and no business or commercial generated waste will be accepted.
All vehicles entering the drop-off site will be stopped to verify that the occupants are East Baton Rouge residents. In addition, the items to be dropped off will also be checked to make sure they are among the household hazardous materials that are being accepted.
Items that will be accepted including fertilizers, pool chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, gasoline and brake fluid. Items that won’t be accepted include fireworks, ammunition, Styrofoam peanuts and appliances. A complete list of what will and won’t be accepted is available at www.brgov.com/recycle.
Although latex paint is not considered hazardous, it is one of the main things brought to the collection each year. People can safely get rid of old latex paint by mixing it with equal parts kitty litter, letting it dry and then putting it in the garbage cart.
Collections like this one during the past 28 years in the parish have resulted in the collection of almost three million pounds of household hazardous waste.
