Vitter chooses in GOP conflict

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., endorsed Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser on Thursday in his bid to oust Republican Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne in fall elections.

Dardenne questioned whether Vitter had done his homework on Nungesser’s background. Nungesser also is a Republican.

Meanwhile, Gov. Bobby Jindal will stay out of the Republican versus Republican Oct. 22 match-up, said Timmy Teepell, Jindal’s campaign aide.

“He’s worked well with both candidates,” Teepell said.

Vitter’s announcement came at a Baton Rouge news conference, in which he called Nungesser the “true conservative” in this race.

“Billy represents our mainstream conservative Louisiana values,” Vitter said. “He’s not a RINO in any way.”

RINO stands for “Republican in name only,” which some conservative members of the GOP have used to criticize more moderate members of their party.

When asked if he was calling Dardenne a “RINO,” Vitter responded, “My focus is on Billy’s leadership.”

Vitter said Nungesser is “a known fighter who has been fighting in the trenches effectively for the people of Louisiana” through four hurricanes and the BP oil leak that devastated the coast.

Nungesser also has proven that he is a jobs creator both as a private sector businessman and governmental leader, Vitter said.

Vitter described his decision to choose between GOP candidates as a sign of the strong growth of the Republican Party in Louisiana.

Vitter’s endorsement marks the second time the state’s junior senator has weighed in on statewide races in which Republicans are challenging one another.

Earlier, Vitter said he is backing House Speaker Jim Tucker, R-Terrytown, for secretary of state over Tom Schedler, who has the job today.

Nungesser welcomed Vitter’s backing. He said he looks forward to continuing working with Vitter on Louisiana issues with the same “cooperative spirit” they have shared in the past.

In an interview, Dardenne said he was surprised by Vitter’s decision.

“David is usually very thorough and calculated in his political moves,” Dardenne said.

“I wonder if Billy failed to tell him that his records of parish president have been subpoenaed as part of an on-going federal investigation; that he contributed to several national Democratic figures including Barbara Boxer, one of the most liberal (U.S.) senators; and that his marina benefited from BP through the oil spill,” Dardenne said.

Dardenne said his record reflects that he is the “true conservative in this race.”

Nungesser did not return a call to his cellphone later Thursday message seeking comment on Dardenne’s remarks.

It’s not the first time that Dardenne has been challenged by the conservative wing of the state’s Republican Party in statewide election campaigns.

When he ran for secretary of state and won, past state party chairman Mike Francis was on the ballot too. Last year, when Dardenne won a special election for lieutenant governor one of his challengers was current state party chairman Roger Villere.

Candidate sign-up in the lieutenant governor and other statewide races is Sept. 6-8.

The fact is that Jay Dardenne has never stayed in one office long enough for the voters to catch on to him..it is the same with Lt. Gov...Dardenne wants to be Governor....or at least a U. S. Senator...both of which he will never be.

"It's no secret that Jay Dardenne has been known to associate with Democrats. I am told from a good source in the local Tea Party..." This is still America, not Burma. As lieutenant governor, Dardenne probably even went to the state capitol to associate with democrats , what a turncoat, eh?

endorsements ; sheeple politics for those too lazy to do their own research ...

Vitter is the last person to endorse anybody. The tragic part of the story is that Republicans are so well entrenched (I don't fault you) that they can now run against each other such as Cao for Attorney General against Caldwell (the turncoat). Democrats are in state of chaos in this state after being in control for so long. I wonder if it is planned because the party is silent on all issues, including convincing someone credible to run for governor. Louisianians do not love Jindal like some people think.

I don't vote for people endorsed by Vitter. It's that simple. I'd vote for a yellow dog Dem before I'd vote for anyone with a Vitter endorsement.

Jay Dardenne is a thinker. He actually uses his brain. I want a republican that can use his head, not somebody who just rants and raves on his Rush Limbaugh mantra. I don't know or care what Jay's sons are. Would that influence your vote? His son is a democrat? The only good thing Dardenne losing his Lt. Gov bid will be that he can run against Vitter in 2016, and he'll have my support.

@Cuz Dave: So I guess Dardenne should only represent Republican Tea Partiers, huh? What a ridiculous comment.

It's no secret that Jay Dardenne has been known to associate with Democrats. I am told from a good source in the local Tea Party that at least one and perhaps both of Dardenne's sons are Democrats. We don't need turncoats like that.

Giantkiller, Vitter won't be voted out of office as long as he has an R next to his name. Melancon, a Democrat who didn't cheat on his wife with prostitutes, voted against the Affordable Health Care Act and was probably the most vocal critic of the deepwater drilling moratorium out there. Still....he lost in a landslide to Vitter. Personal integrity and character doesn't matter anymore, not in Louisiana politics, anyway.

I voted for and gave money to the both Vitter senate campaigns, and I want to go on record that I will NEVER do so again. I hope Jay Dardenne runs against this trash bag that is in the senate now. I shook Vitter's hand at 2 fundraisers, gave considerable money.. that is all over. Please please please fellow republicans - Remember this and VOTE VITTER OUT OF OFFICE.

I really don't see how Vitter thinks that a guy who believes that everything needs to be handed down to you from the Federal Government on a silver platter is a conservative or a Republican.

I couldn't agree with you more MBW. As far as I'm concerned, an endorsement from Vitter is a glowing recommendation for the other candidate! Welcome to the circus, by the way...

Great. A couple of guys trying to out-conservative eachother. Is this really what it comes down to in Louisiana politics? Bummer...

If my house ever catches on fire, Billy Nungesser is like the very last person I want there to put it out. Instead of grabbing a water hose, he probably sit there and complain on a mega phone to my neighbors about how I left the oven on. Same thing with the oil spill. Just attacked the Big Oil Industry and his big mouth drove tourism away from the entire Gulf Coast during 2010. Vacationers avoided the Gulf Coast because of Billy Nungesser and his over exaggerations on TV. He was more of a problem than the solution. Not impressed with his big mouth and anger problem.

Why would anyone listen to the endorsement of a sleazebag like Vitter. Why Louisiana would keep somebody like Vitter in office is beyond me.

17) Comment by MBW - 02/09/2011

Personally, I think the terms RINO and DINO are compliments. We need people who are AMERICANS first, not ideologues and blowhards.

18) Comment by MBW - 02/09/2011

Before I moved to Louisiana in January, I used to see Billy Nungesser on TV during the oil spill and would think "who is this local yokel they found?" And he wants to be Lt. Governor? lol.

19) Comment by slye753 - 02/09/2011

Vitter is making a big mistake backing Billy. Jay is known state wide and is doing an excellent job. Billy is not known outside of his space and except what people saw on tv about him and BP. but that is what politics is about.

20) Comment by Michael Gary Scott - 02/09/2011

Big Mputh Billy would be a disaster for us, he has made a jacka** of himself on national news time and time again. Dardenne has did a good job with state museums when he was Secretary of State and is doing a good job with tourism and state park working under a very tight budget. Nungesser doesn't have the experience in tourism needed, however he is an expert at whining about not getting what he wants off the FEMA truck.
