Fire reignites, spreads to house next door
Firefighters from the District 6 Fire Department said they thought they extinguished a house fire on Matthews Street at about 11 p.m. Sunday, but the fire reignited several hours later and spread to the house next door.
Chief Joel Hancock said the first fire started in the bedroom before spreading to the rest of the house at 5644 Matthews St.
Firefighters pumped more than 5,000 gallons of water into the house and thought they had extinguished it, Hancock said.
At 3:15 a.m., the department received another call, saying the fire had reignited and spread to the attic of the house next door at 5632 Matthews St.
Hancock said both houses received severe fire and water damage.
No one was in either house at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
