Former state Rep. Jane Smith was named Friday to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Smith was appointed by Gov. Bobby Jindal to succeed Stephen Waguespack, who left when he became president of Louisiana Association of Business and Industry.
BESE sets policies for about 700,000 public school students statewide.
Smith is former superintendent of the Bossier Parish school system. She was also a teacher and principal.
Smith served as acting secretary and deputy secretary for the state Department of Revenue.
She will continue her job as a part-time liaison for legislative affairs for the department.
“Jane is bringing critical education experience and a lifelong passion for education to BESE,” Jindal said in a prepared statement.
BESE includes three members named by the governor and eight elected from districts.
