GONZALES — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans a public meeting at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to provide an update on the West Shore levee project, corps officials said.
The public will have an opportunity to provide input on the corps draft plan for the hurricane protection levee, which would not include Ascension and St. James parishes.
The draft plan recommends an alignment that largely protects St. John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes from flooding out of Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain and calls for home elevations and possible buyouts in St. James.
Corps officials have said their cost-benefit analyses favor the shorter levee.
Local officials, including in Ascension, have been trying to provide more information on the economic benefit of a longer levee before a Monday deadline to receive comments.
The center is at 9039 St. Landry Road, Gonzales.
