Around Livingston for Sept. 23, 2013

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Livingston, and Faithful Companions Pet Grooming will present a Bow Wow Ween pet costume contest at noon Oct. 5 in the Denham Springs Antique District.

Lineup is at 11 a.m. All proceeds and donations will go to the SPCA of Livingston.

The registration fee for the costume contest is $15 per dog prior to show day, $20 the day of the event. If registering for additional categories, the fee is $5 each for a dog from the same family.

Winners will be announced immediately following the show and must be present to win.

Republican Women

The Livingston Parish Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 2 at Big Mike’s, 123 Aspen Square, just north of I-12 off of Range Avenue.

Guest speaker is Jeff Landry, former U. S. Congressman from District 3. The public is invited to attend. There is a charge for lunch.

Parents meeting

The meeting for parents of gifted Livingston Parish students is scheduled at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Denham Springs Library, 8101 U.S. 190.

The meeting will include a meet-and-greet session, an introduction and background of’s mission, recent changes to the program, service options for students and a question-and-answer session.

Anniversary celebration

Our Lady of the Lake Livingston holds its one-year anniversary celebration and health fair Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at the hospital at 5000 O’Donovan Blvd., Walker.

The anniversary will include blood pressure checks, cardiac rhythm tests, cholesterol checks, blood sugar checks and assesstments for participants’ risks of stroke.

Kids Fun Day

The Killian Police Department will host our Kids Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at 20365 La. 22 (Wandaland) in Killian.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office will have its helicopter and Special Response Team response vehicle along with the District 2 Fire Department, Baton Rouge Corvette Club and motorcycles.

All of the games, air jumps and booths are free for children. There will be food for sale. Proceeds will used to support schools in the parish.
