An eighth-grader at an alternative school in north Baton Rouge was arrested Thursday after an unloaded gun was found in his backpack.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayburn Hicks said the 15-year-old boy, a student at Beechwood Superintendent’s Academy, was booked Thursday with illegal carrying of a weapon on school property. He was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center.
A school administrator received a tip the boy was carrying a weapon. A school resource officer then found the .38-caliber handgun in the student’s backpack, Hicks said.
The student gave no reason for having the weapon, but also made no threats authorities are aware of, she said.
The Beechwood Superintendent’s Academy is an alternative school with almost 200 students that opened in August and focuses on students who are years behind their peers.
