The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance week begins Friday and continues through Sept. 12.
The activities, organized by the Capital Area United Way and BASF Chemical Co., will allow the community to honor the armed forces, local first responders, rescue and recovery workers, volunteers and public safety personnel.
The first activity is a fundraiser from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Taco Boudreaux, 2628 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd. Participants can write cards to local first responders, and a percentage of dining sales will go to CAUW.
Cards and notes can also be written from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Whole Foods Market, 7529 Corporate Blvd., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Perkins Rowe Town Square, 10202 Perkins Rowe.
On Wednesday, a Packing Party and Troop Care Package Drop-Off event will be from 6 a.m. to noon at North Boulevard Town Square. The community can drop off completed care packages with the following items for troops: beef jerky, instant coffee or powdered drink mixes, sunflower seeds, candy, gum, Cajun seasoning, Chex mix or pretzels, dry soup mix, travel-size hand sanitizer, easy-to-carry packets of baby wipes, eye drops and nonaerosol deodorant.
Liquid items should be sealed in a plastic bag or container. Items can also be dropped off individually to add to packages.
