COVINGTON — Construction of a traffic circle at Bootlegger Road and Ochsner Boulevard southwest of Covington is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
St. Tammany Parish officials said the structure, also known as a roundabout, is part of a series of similar projects expected to be completed by June 14.
Authorities said vehicular traffic will be able to continue using Bootlegger Road during construction, and access to businesses is not expected to be impeded.
Motorists should expect delays in the construction area.
The Bootlegger Road project is the latest state highway roundabout project in St. Tammany.
Roundabouts exist at La. 59 and La. 36 in Abita Springs at Brown’s Switch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, and at U.S. 190 and La. 434 in Lacombe.
Roundabouts are planned at several other locations, including two on La. 59 between Mandeville and Interstate 12.
Parish planners say roundabouts help ease traffic congestion and cost less to build and maintain than traditional intersections, particularly because they do not require as much land, maintenance or signals.
