CLINTON — East Feliciana Parish sheriff’s deputies on Friday released the identity of the elderly woman who was shot and killed by an 8-year-old boy Thursday afternoon at Country Breeze Mobile Home Park on La. 67 south of Clinton.
A news release from the Sheriff’s Office said the victim, Marie Smothers, 87, of 1090 La. 67, was the current caregiver on the juvenile suspect.
The woman died after suffering a gunshot wound to the head shortly after 5 p.m., Sgt. Kevin Garig said.
The boy was released to his parents Thursday night, Garig said, adding that the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
Although the juvenile initially told investigators that he accidentally shot the victim while playing with a firearm, the investigation has led investigators to believe that the 8-year- old intentionally shot Smothers in the back of the head as she sat in her living room watching television.
“By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship and even shared the same bedroom. Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing a video game, ‘Grand theft Auto IV,’, a realistic game that has been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people, just minutes before the homicide occurred,” the news release says.
Upon completion of the Sheriff’s Office investigation, the case will be forwarded to the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the news release says.
