Police searched the apartment of LSU senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson at Oakbrook Apartments on Nicholson Drive on Wednesday.

Police look in LSU player’s apartment, take DNA

Investigators obtained DNA from LSU senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson and searched his home Wednesday for evidence into his alleged involvement in a bar fight last week, police spokesman Sgt. Donald Stone said.

Police also are looking into a possible video of the fight posted on the website of local radio station WSKR-AM 1210, “The Score,” Stone said.

Detectives searched Jefferson’s off-campus apartment — leaving with several brown paper bags — because they believed evidence was there that would “prove or disprove” his involvement in the Aug. 19 fight outside Shady’s bar, 623 E. Boyd Drive, Stone said.

Stone would not get into specifics about the possible evidence at Jefferson’s Oakbrook apartment on Nicholson Drive nor clarify the exact purpose of the DNA swab.

“We searched his home because we had enough probable cause to,” Stone said.

Jefferson, 20, is one of four LSU football players implicated in the fight with four other men who are not football players.

The other football players are freshman wide receiver Jarvis Landry, 18; sophomore offensive tackle Chris Davenport, 21; and sophomore linebacker Josh Johns, 21.

Jefferson was at his apartment during the search but was not interviewed by investigators, Stone said.

Jefferson has a roommate, Stone said, but police only searched the areas “that (Jefferson) has access to.”

Investigators searched Jefferson’s apartment for about one to two hours, Stone said.

There are no plans at this time to search any homes of additional football players implicated in the fight, Stone said.

Police asked the four players to come in for interviews after witnesses reported the men were involved in a fight outside of Shady’s at 1:30 a.m. Friday, Stone has said.

Stone has emphasized that the players who came in for interviews have only been implicated in the fight but have not been charged with a criminal offense.

The players met with police Tuesday morning at Louisiana State Police headquarters for about two hours after police initially said the meeting would happen Monday morning.

Nathan Fisher, the players’ attorney, requested an extra day to review the case.

Fisher attended the player’s Tuesday meeting with police. He said afterward it went “about as we expected.”

Fisher said he thinks his clients should not be charged because of evidence he said is pertinent.

Stone would not comment Wednesday on what the players said at Tuesday’s meeting. He said police have not spoken to any other LSU football players about the incident.

No one has been arrested in the case.

The fight started when a man in a truck blew the horn to try to clear a crowd in the bar’s parking lot, Stone has said.

The situation escalated to a fight and four men, none of whom are members of the LSU football team, were treated at a hospital for minor injuries, police have said.

Those four men’s names have not been released.

Of those injured, one man had three fractured vertebrae and another man was knocked unconscious, police have said.

Police Chief Dewayne White said Tuesday at police headquarters that the man who was knocked unconscious and suffered contusions to his head, nose and hands is a Marine.

White said the four LSU football players also gave investigators the names of at least a dozen witnesses.

White said investigators have conflicting statements from people they have interviewed about the fight and that they have not yet talked to anyone from a third party.

When warrants are issued, those arrested will likely be booked on second-degree battery and simple battery counts, Stone has said.

Stone said it is still possible for the four men involved with the fight with the players to have criminal charges filed against them.

Second-degree battery is a felony offense that carries a maximum five-year prison sentence upon conviction. Simple battery is a misdemeanor.

Michael P. Bienvenu, an attorney for some of the people reportedly involved in the fight, has repeatedly declined to comment about the case.

He released a statement to the media Sunday saying his clients have “cooperated fully with the ongoing investigation into this matter.”

The LSU football players went to the bar Thursday night after being in their apartments for 10:30 p.m. curfew, LSU head football coach Les Miles said.

Miles said after his radio show Wednesday night at TJ Ribs restaurant that he was surprised by the search of Jefferson’s apartment but did not offer any further comment.

“Obviously there is an investigation going on concerning one of our teammates,” Miles said in reference to the search.

“It’s a side distraction to a great season that we do not want,” Miles continued. “But I told our (players), we made our bed and now it’s time to get it right.”

It is a crying shame the media is blowing this incident up. I just finished reading the incident report and I did not see any indication that JJ should be charged with anything other than SIMPLE assault along with Lowery. The report stated that the w/m that was "pulled" out of his truck, drove off in the same truck. Apparently, he was not unconscious and neither was Lowery. The driver of the truck along with two other males showed up at EKL with injuries. The incident report did not state that there were any serious injuries to anyone. JJ may have kicked Lowery in the head/face, but he did not cause any serious injury to him. Something is very strange about this. I think these individuals see $$ in the cards. If this goes to trial they better hope I'm not on the jury.

I think it's a shame the number of marines that are posting threats on Jefferson's facebook page! They don't even know the whole story...I think Jefferson is correct to say the marines need to take a chill pill! They can't possibly be proud of this marine (if he is in fact still a marine)! What arrogance!

3) Comment by justagirl - 25/08/2011

Not saying what he is claiming didn't happen, just that it is hard to take him at his word.

4) Comment by justagirl - 25/08/2011

You are correct lsu1088. If you Google Andrew Lowery LSU you will find his mugshot and articles referencing his criminal record. He took a plea for petty theft (not sure what the original charge was as most pleas reduce the actual charge) in Florida. This and his harassment and stalking of his ex-girlfriend doesn't make him look too credible IMO.

my comment will be deleted shortly... lol

That's Funny "lip blowing".... I've also heard that he got in some trouble in Florida (possibly violence and burglary) but that might not be true. I also heard he is a part time bouncer at Shady's. Plus I believe he was the aggressor (which im not saying makes any of this right). I heard the "lip blowing" started in the bar when the lsu players told him to leave the girl he was harrassing alone. Well we now know that Lowry hits people when they take up for his x-girlfriend. Im just saying. What % of people get beat up for honking a horn compared to harrassing (stalking) a girl. Im gonna say 99% stalker and 1% honker.

Now is the time for JJ's attorney and parents to come to his aid. He has been exploited by the media and this is not fair.

8) Comment by Grannee - 25/08/2011

Love ya lsu 1088, set them straight.! As I said earlier, I don't believe the football players fought these guys just because. They were provoked and the police should get to the bottom of this without destroying JJ. There is no way if the driver had his windows up and doors locked could he have been pulled out of a truck. To be fair, ALL 8 should be arrested and charged, if any!

9) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

You were right too lsu1088! What is an 18 year old doing in a bar? Oh sorry...got off track...I agree with you about there being more to this guy than we know...you mix alcohol, testosterone, bad temperment (Lowery) and that's just not a good mix! I know this whole mess didn't start because of a horn blowing...more like lip blowing!

10) Comment by lsu1088 - 25/08/2011

I TOLD YOU MR. Editor.... I posted about Lowry, this morning, harrassing a girl and being violent earlier that day of the fight. BUT the editor deleted my POST! So do you think he got beat up because he honked his horn at a crowd??? I dont think so. There is more to him that i had mentioned but it was deleted also.

11) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

Strike that...the latest article didn't say SHE was in Shady's Bar that night...just another bar the night before!

12) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

More of the story is coming out...seems this Lowry isn't as such an innocent bystander as first thought! Seems he has his own court date coming up in September for stalking his ex-girlfriend (who happened to be in the bar that night and has a restraining order against him)!

13) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

OMG...they seized 49 paris of tennis shoes from Jefferson's apartment! I don't even own 49 shoes! I just saw the video and couldn't tell what was going on...the video isn't that clear and is too dark to see anything conclusive (my opinion).

14) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

Maybe we should stop calling them "The Fighting Tigers"! Hmm....

15) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

I feel it's pointless to speculate on things that we've (the public) read, seen on video, or watched on TV until the BRPD completes their investigation. I read lsu1088's comment about the marine and saw no reason for it to be removed. I found it quite interesting and would like to find out more about this marine and his past record...oh I guess I can't do that until they release the other four names involved...I would be interested in knowing whether or not he is still active or discharged. We will just have to wait and see what happens when the entire story unfolds. I'm wondering if my comment will remain or be deleted since I mentioned the previous marine comment!

16) Comment by Grannee - 25/08/2011

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but on the video the person that was on the ground being kicked did not appear to be knocked unconscious. You can see him moving and getting up off the ground. Did anyone else observe this?

17) Comment by Grannee - 25/08/2011

@NewsReader, why are you calling me names because I don't agree with your analogy of the incident. Do you have any inside information on any of the murders that you can FACTUALLY state NO one has stepped forward with information in any of the black murders? It is evident by your statements that you are relying solely on what you see on crime stoppers. Until you know for a FACT that the blacks don't provide information, please be quiet and remain from calling people names. I can assure you that I am far from being "simple-minded".

18) Comment by NewsReader - 25/08/2011

Of course even if charges are filed it doesn't mean anything. There is more than sufficient reasonable doubt in everyone's mind. Getting a conviction will be such a remote option I cannot see this progressing much. Plus, with all this airtime not just locally but nationally too, how on earth could they ever assemble a jury that hasn't been influenced by what they've seen, read or heard? BTW Grannee, are you deliberately being obtuse? Do you never hear the BRPD make requests on tv for witnesses to step forward in murders and shootings in North Baton Rouge? Hell they can't even get people to step up when they are offered money to report what or who they saw.

19) Comment by rman - 25/08/2011

I applaud the efforts of the BRPD to make sure they get this right! If one of these LSU players did wrong they should be treated like everyone else and prosecuted. However, the fact that they are taking so long makes me worry that some LSU boosters and fans might have influence. I know if I had done this they would have already put me behind bars. Lets hope the Chief of PD has the backbone to follow up firmly and quickly. If not the next investigation could be of their handling of this case.

Saw this last night on NOLA.com. Someone also said come on Josh in the video.

I agree with "It's a shame so many Amerikans allow themselves to be so easily mesmerized by the lives of politicians, government employees and sports players" Even worse are the boring, self-absorbed, know it all type.

22) Comment by anonomous - 25/08/2011

CH2 just released a video on its website. It shows a man at Shadys Bar on the ground being kicked, and the name Jordan being yelled.

23) Comment by lsu1088 - 25/08/2011

I agree with Grannee... and how can you keep putting that the fight started when a guy honked his horn to clear the crowd according to stone. That is not factual. We dont know why he honked his horn. Plus he could of went the other way, opposite of the crowd, to exit. "freedom of speech"... DONT preach about freedom of speech, they jsut deleted my comment, how is that freedom of speech. And dont say this is a private website and they have the right to blah blah blah.... they sure havent earned that right, but they do abuse it.

24) Comment by markedwardmarchiafava - 25/08/2011

It's a shame so many Amerikans allow themselves to be so easily mesmerized by the lives of politicians, government employees and sports players.

25) Comment by anonomous - 25/08/2011

Miles states "get it right". Does that interpret to win football games. How is that AMENDS? That is the word he used in public statement. People were injured in a bar fight with dozens of witnesses. What football players were involved and what were their consequences?

26) Comment by Grannee - 25/08/2011

@NewsReader IF it were my children, grandchildren, etc. that were involved in a fight against the LSU players I can assure you that it would not get the press that this is getting. Also, I would want to know what my kids did to PROVOKE these individuals. I saw lsu1088 comments and did not see anything wrong with what they said. It is ok for this private newspaper to parade all this information about JJ around, but no information on his accusers. You believe this is fair and balanced reporting? If the marine was asked to leave the bar, what was wrong with lsu1088 stating that? FYI, in one particular murder case in BR, they have witnesses, DNA, etc. and still no arrest.....so what's your point? How do you know witnesses have not come forwarded in these "black" murders? What I am saying is if the same attention is given to these murders as this bar fight, maybe they could solve them. DNA for a bar fight, come on! This is over kill.

27) Comment by BRREB - 25/08/2011

NewsReader - very well said!

28) Comment by lsu1088 - 25/08/2011

I wish they would give the "marine" a different reference title. I have a feeling other marines dont want this guy representing there well respected title.

29) Comment by lsu1088 - 25/08/2011

Why did they delete my comment about the marine?

30) Comment by NewsReader - 25/08/2011

Grannee, any website can choose whether or not they allow comments to be posted or not. Freedom of speech rights don't pertain to a private website being forced to allow any and all comments to stand. I never saw the comment, but suspect it involved someone's alleged knowledge of previous actions by the USMC. As for your comments about the racial issue with black murders, I guess it hasn't crossed your mind that in this case there seem to be dozens of witnesses willing to come forth whereas in those unfortunate murders everybody disappears or disavows any knowledge of what transpired. The BRPD cannot win this one in the public eye. Had they ignored it people would be upset and their actions questioned as you can be assured there will be a civil lawsuit by the 4 alleged victims. Pursue it like they are and they get accused of being overzealous. Just wonder what action you would want them to take if you, your children, grandchildren (?) suffered injuries requiring an ER visit.

31) Comment by simplyme - 25/08/2011

I think this is insane! All of this behind a bar fight?? DNA, really people? Talk about a waste of tax dollars. For as long as boys will be boys and men will be men, bar fights will occur. If these folks want to press charges, let them handle it in civil court.

32) Comment by Grannee - 25/08/2011

I am truly appauled that the BRPD and news media in this city is spending so much time on this incident. There are countless MURDERS that have not been solved. If each group would put forth the same effort, I am sure these murders would have been solved a long time ago. Is it because the murder victims are mostly black? Is it because the assault victims are white that this case is given priority and so much attention? Also, if the advocate continues to "censor" everything and shut down articles so we can't comment, I will go to NOLA's website. Put the comment about the marine back up Mr. Editor. This is pathetic!

33) Comment by KB - 25/08/2011

Hmmm...you're right mcarter! I wonder what happened to it? I am very curious as to why they took a DNA sample from Jefferson...there is so much more to this story!

34) Comment by mcarter - 25/08/2011

Interesting...the comment regarding the marine in the fight has disappeared.

35) Comment by mcarter - 25/08/2011

Has the Baton Rouge police department ever spent this much time on a bar fight?????????DNA???????????????????

36) Comment by upser22 - 25/08/2011

I love how they didn't "interview" him. Is the word interrogation to harsh?

37) Comment by markedwardmarchiafava - 25/08/2011

While God may have created all men equal, obviously the Advocate hasn't gotten that memo.
