Ronald Byrd, 37, 1148 N. 48th St., was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on two counts of felony hit-and-run, four counts of misdemeanor hit-and-run, two counts of negligent injuring, reckless operation, careless operation and driving left of center, said Lt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge police spokesman. Wallace Britton, 33, a one-year police veteran, and the woman, Rita Canty, 58, 5680 Prescott Road, remain hospitalized, but are expected to recover from their injuries, Kelly said. Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Britton was standing and speaking with Canty outside an apartment complex about a vehicle break-in when a Dodge Caravan veered off Prescott Road and struck the back of Britton’s patrol car, Kelly said. The impact threw Britton into the air and he landed on another parked vehicle, while Canty was pinned between the police car and another parked vehicle, Kelly said. The minivan, which was traveling west on Prescott Road, struck two more parked vehicles, knocking one into a brick wall of the apartment complex, before coming to a stop, Kelly said. The driver escaped on foot.
