The Advocate names Wilson VP of Digital Media

Michael Wilson has been named vice president for digital media at The Advocate.

Wilson, 38, started working with The Advocate as an intern in 1999. For the past three years, he has been digital media director, supervising and running the newspaper’s website.

The Advocate has been named website of the year by the Associated Press Managing Editors in Louisiana and Mississippi and by the Louisiana Press Association.

“The vision I have for my position is to weave a digital mindset into the DNA of The Advocate,” Wilson said.

“I love the printed product and I’m not looking to replace or subvert it. My wish is to help the great news and sales persons of our organization reach as many different audiences as possible.”

Dan Shea, general manager and chief operating officer of The Advocate, said Wilson will report directly to him to help the company move more quickly and aggressively into the digital future.

“There is no more crucial task ahead of us,” Shea said.

“Michael has over the last few years willingly shed his staff and operational responsibilities to try to integrate digital better into news and advertising,” Shea said. “In his new position, he’ll be able to increase our pace.”

John Georges, the publisher and chief executive officer of The Advocate, has said that pursuing opportunities in digital media is one of the immediate challenges he faces as the new owner of The Advocate.

Wilson is a native of Cherry Hill, N.J., who has lived in Baton Rouge for the past 20 years.

He attended Southern University and is a former editor of The Southern Digest. He is a former editor of The Baker Observer and former managing editor for The Louisiana Suburban Press in Zachary.

Wilson has held a number of different positions at The Advocate, including working as a graphics page designer, digital media news editor and digital media manager.

“We are the No. 1 news source in south Louisiana, and if I do my job well, we will expand and solidify that dominance,” Wilson said.

Editor’s note: This story was changed May 10, 2013, to correctly say that Wilson attended Southern University.
