Arrest made in Hammond shooting that left one dead

HAMMOND—Hammond police arrested a Springfield man on counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder following a shooting Friday.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at 1387 U.S. 190, apartment 15, and found the apartment’s two residents lying outside on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds, Hammond Police Lt. Vince Giannobile said in a news release Monday.

Dewayne Williams, 22, had been shot in the upper leg and was taken to LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. His brother, Jeremy Williams, 20, had been shot in the back and was taken to North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Giannobile said.

Dewayne Williams’ medical condition is not known.

Investigators arrested Travis Whigham, 27, 31566 Dudley Lane, Springfield, at an apartment on West Hoffman Road in Ponchatoula. Whigham was booked into the Hammond City Jail on one count each of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, and was later transferred to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite, Giannobile said.

Investigators found there was an altercation Thursday night in Springfield involving the same three men and a possible attempted armed robbery, Giannobile said. The case is still under investigation.
