Smoking ban bill advances Smoking ban bill advances capitol news bureau April 30, 2013 Comments Smoking would be banned near entrances to state-owned buildings under legislation that cleared a Louisiana House committee Tuesday. Under the legislation, House Bill 111, smoking could not occur within 25-feet of the building’s entrance. The bill does provide for exceptions for the Mercedes Benz Superdome and the New Orleans Arena. State Rep. Frank Hoffmann, R-West Monroe, said he sponsored the bill so people “don’t have to breathe second-hand smoke when entering a building.” “I just wonder whether we are getting a little bit too far in micromanaging people’s behavior,” said state Rep. John Morris,R-Monroe. “This is an issue of second hand smoke,” replied Hoffmann. The House Health and Welfare Committee approved the bill on a 15-1 vote. The bill now moves to the House floor.
