LSU Faculty Senate votes ‘no confidence’ in board

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU’s faculty leaders say they have no faith in the university system’s governing board to make wise decisions, and they question the credentials of the contender to be system president.

LSU Faculty Senate President Kevin Cope said Wednesday that the group approved a “vote of no confidence” in the Board of Supervisors.

The vote comes as the board brings its contender for the president and chancellor’s job to Baton Rouge this week: F. King Alexander, president of California State University Long Beach.

Among faculty complaints are the closed-door handling of the presidential search.

The Faculty Senate also question the recommendation that Alexander should be president, noting he’s never been a tenured full professor at a major research university and graduation rates at his university are lower than those at LSU.

Correction: the sixth sentence should read--"Mr. Alexander's pro-tax stance and crude populism are being. . .". My apologies.

FINALLY! I was wondering when a significant protest against the "flagship" becoming a "dinghy" would occur. Regrettably, it might turn out that only what's left of the faculty cares. Louisianans' general apathy--if not outright hostility--toward education makes championing high-quality education for Louisianans more Quixotic by the minute. One suspects, too, that no matter what the faculty says or does, the die already has been cast-- by the board, in collusion with the governor's office and entrenched political and economic interests. Mr. Alexander's pro-tax, crude populism are being used as a reverse-psychology smokescreen. Indeed, his background provides a glimpse of a consummate opportunist who'll do whatever is necessary to build his CV and who's ready to jump onto the next bandwagon. Therefore, he'll do great with LA power brokers, as have Jindal, White, Jenkins, Cassidy, and so on.
