The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the victim of a Tuesday night stabbing as Lolita Bailey, whose 13-year-old stepson is being held on a count of second-degree murder.
Coroner Dr. Carl Ditch in a news release said Bailey died of “multiple stab wound, and the manner of death is homicide.”
Bailey’s stepson was transported to St. James Juvenile Detention Center on Tuesday.
The Coroner’s Office pronounced Bailey dead at the scene Tuesday after responding deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office “found no signs consistent with life,” Capt. Ryan Turner said in a news release Wednesday.
Law enforcement was alerted to the stabbing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by a 911 caller who was a friend of Bailey, Turner said.
Turner said the friend, a woman who has not been identified by police, walked in while the attack was occurring.
Betty Guillot and her daughter-in-law Christie Guillot live next door to the home at 4615 Loreauville Road, where Bailey was killed. The Guillots said the woman who called police told them she saw the boy after the attack.
The woman said the stepson was descending stairs inside the home wearing a mask and holding a bloody knife, Betty Guillot said.
Iberia officials have not released the name of the suspect.
According to records at the Iberia Parish Tax Assessor’s Office, the home, which was draped with crime-scene tape Tuesday night, is owned by Warren and Lolita Bailey.
The Guillots said Warren Bailey, an oil and gas worker and the father of the suspect, was offshore when the killing occurred Tuesday.
The Guillots also said Lolita Bailey, known by friends and family as Lot, cooked and shared with everyone “exotic” foods she had learned to cook as a young girl in the Philippines.
“She was a sweet, sweet, sweet lady,” Christie Guillot said.
