“We get constant updates ... I know it’s been a long, frustrating process for them.” Gov. Bobby Jindal, after being asked when he might visit the sinkhole  found Aug. 3 in Assumption Parish.

Gov. Bobby Jindal did not give a reason Wednesday for why he has not visited a sinkhole that is keeping hundreds of residents in Assumption Parish under an evacuation order.

The issue came up during a news conference at the Governor’s Mansion about a Baton Rouge business project.

Jindal outlined the business project and then opened up the news conference for questions.

Asked when he might visit the sinkhole that was found Aug. 3 in northern Assumption Parish, Jindal did not give a direct answer. Instead, the governor listed the state agencies tasked with monitoring the sinkhole and vowed to hold someone responsible for damage to homes.

“We get constant updates ... I know it’s been a long, frustrating process for them,” the governor said, referring to the displaced residents.

The question was posed a second and third time about when residents can expect to see him. The governor repeated the same response without addressing when or if he might visit the sinkhole evacuees.

“Again, we’ll continue to work with those agencies to make sure we hold the company accountable,” Jindal said.

The governor’s press secretary, Sean Lansing, then changed the topic of the questioning by calling on a reporter who had not raised his hand. When the reporter expressed puzzlement at his name being called, Lansing called on a different reporter.

The news conference shifted away from the sinkhole and onto other topics, including a tax system overhaul plan that is expected to be the focal point of the upcoming legislative session.

About 350 residents are under evacuation orders in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities.

A Texas Brine cavern underwent a sidewall collapse at a depth of more than 5,000 feet, allowing rock to flow into the brine-filled cavity. The shift in the earth caused a sinkhole.

Jindal has come under criticism for not visiting the site, which has kept some residents out of their homes for months.

Adding to residents’ frustration is the inability to sell their homes until the sinkhole issue is resolved. Texas Brine has not offered buyouts.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich and a California lawyer will be in Pierre Part on Saturday to talk to residents about their legal options. Brockovich is famous for her work on a $333 million settlement for California residents exposed to contaminated ground water.

While not visiting the sinkhole, the governor has traveled the country for political events. He was out of state almost one day of every four in 2012, but never made it to the sinkhole site in Assumption Parish, less than 40 miles from the Governor’s Mansion. He recently was in Washington, D.C., for a White House dinner and other events. While there, he blasted the president for campaigning instead of tackling problems.

Jindal also had little to say Wednesday about the tax plan he will unveil to legislators next week.

The plan will eliminate the state’s personal income and corporate taxes in exchange for replacing the revenue with other tax sources.

Still unknown is how much state sales, cigarette and other taxes would have to increase to make up for the lost revenue.

The governor said he still is holding meetings to finalize the details. He said he expects the plan to change as it moves through the legislative process.

“We’ll be ready by March 15,” Jindal said.

All of this is more evidence for why Jindal is not ready for prime time and for why his poll numbers are sinking daily. He has become a one-man wrecking balln this state. Does he realize how foolish he looks running around kissing up to national media, trying to position himself for a presidential run? AS IF he has a snowball's chance in hell!

I don't think the issue is what "good" he can do by going to the sinkhole. Rather, the issue (for me, at least) is his behaving like a human being with some degree of empathy and feeling, being able to put himself in the place of "the other" and showing some real concern and solidarity by BEING THERE, if only for half of a day. That should not be too much to ask of any governor, regardless of state or party affiliation. It would be a perfect opportunity for him to demonstrate in some small measure that he might be something other than a mere empty-suited political opportunist.

Rodeo Clown, You rock dude! Piyush doesn't want to be seen near anything that does not involve: Cutting a ribbon, smiling stupidly while someone who knows more than he does speaks, hearing real world ideas from people, handing out medals to veterans who although deserve our respect and thanks, don't need another medal from some paper-pusher to validate their patriotism, or anything that might tarnish his halo. What an empty suit...

Just a hunch, but there seems to be a reason Jindal is staying away. It seems beyond thoughtlessness. Is it just that he doesn't want to come across anti-business or anti-O&G? Or does the State, maybe through DNR, have some culpability here? I vaguely remember charges of lies coming from DNR early on. I don't know. I smell a rat.

Stopping by, checking on people who probably voted him, would require empathy. He'll sidestep anything that might distract him from getting ready to go to DC.

Besides, what is Jindal going to do at the sinkhole? Cut its funding?

Bobby want visit Bayou Corne for one simple reason-competition. He can't fathom that a bigger and more perfect hole was created either by an accidental or natural phenomena(further studies will tell). A huge, devastating hole was created without his help. Unlike the huge hole Jindal, has created in Louisiana. Jindal's premeditated efforts were/are specifically aimed at providing fewer services for the masses, privatizing any governmental service that is not "nailed down"(it's a shame he can't privatize his ugly self out of Louisiana) and creating a tax-free environment for those capable of financing his future political ambitions. Jindal want go to Bayou Corne for one simple reason-competition. He can't compete with a hole bigger than his self.

twinkie, I do not know the answer, but you seem to have an idea... have any major democrat politicians been there to look? Have any, from either party? I don't know. I do know that like I said, Bobby could care less if he loses the Louisiana vote for president, because NO presidential candidates care about La votes, neither party. They may make a stop or two here, but that is all.

WTG The Advocate! This article is EXACTLY what our state needs. A media that questions the leadership rather than only publishing their press releases.

11) Comment by Mygulfbleedsforu - 07/03/2013

Yep, the good people of Assumption Parish, as with so many other LA residents, have been propagandized into believing GOOD people vote Republican. I'm not sure it even matters any more what evidence to the contrary floats constantly in their faces.

12) Comment by twinkie1cat - 07/03/2013

Crazy Cajun made a good point. Piyush thinks he has Assumption Parish locked up for the GOP so why would he care about going down there? It would be like if Romney had spent a week in Livingston Parish. Like I said in another section. Republicans have no heart and no conscience.

13) Comment by twinkie1cat - 07/03/2013

What is this. Does our dictator have stock in Texas Brine? Or perhaps they are a major campaign contributor? There is nothing like a little personal involvement and Piyush just avoids it like the plague so that he does not have to look at the human suffering he causes or be responsible for justifying what he is doing to this state. But he can stir up trouble in places remote from Louisiana on issues he has no business butting into on Louisiana's credit card, so much so that their citizens beg us to get him away from them. Well, maybe the people of Assumption Parish will take this out on their state and national representatives and say, "Well if Jindal is the face of the Republican party, I am going back to being a Democrat. Where's my ballot?" 37% is probably a popularity number he can set as a GOAL at this point. I figure it has dropped to about a -10% with his staff only sticking with him for the fat paychecks.>>>>>>>Supyra is apparently no Michelle Obama when it comes to advising her man, so she is about as incompetent as a First Lady as he is in his job. How about a resignation, governor? I would rather have a personable crook, myself.

14) Comment by Thurston_Howell_III - 07/03/2013

Not surprised. The day booby leaves office will be a great day in La.

15) Comment by foldgers - 07/03/2013

Not defending Bobby here at all, but have ANY politicians visited this site? Any of their "representatives?" And not the local ones, like city councilmen. Bets on Bobby going there soon because a famous person has now taken the case? At this point though, if his campaigning has been more important than these people, and I was one of those people there, I would not even want him to come now. In fact, if I was Mayor, I would make sure he was not welcomed to come. Bobby is losing Louisiana votes by the second for him if he decides to run, but then again, what presidential candidate has EVER cared about Louisiana?

16) Comment by DMJ - 07/03/2013

In all fairness, I don't like to go to Assumption Parish either.

I skipped the column and arrived at the comment section to find as usual, comedy at it's finest! Way to go, ya'll.

Now that I think about it, I've never seen the two of them together . . . me thinks Booby is the sinkhole.

19) Comment by crazycajun - 07/03/2013

You'd be surprised at how many people down there vote repub. I wonder how they feel about their beloved party now. They support this party and they don't amount to a hill of beans in the eyes of Louisiana's top repub?

20) Comment by postscript56 - 07/03/2013

Bobby's not going to the sinkhole. What could he possibly say to excuse having not gone before now?

21) Comment by Bouncer - 07/03/2013

When will people finally take the blinders off and realize that despicable little toad we have for a governor cares nothing for the residents of the state? He's not even socially adept enough to realize that he could perhaps gain a few brownie points by at least PRETENDING to care about those affected by the sinkhole. As far as this fabulous new business locating here.....well, as someone else has mentioned, it's just another unskilled labor magnet. Might was well open up several more McDonalds. The net effect would be the same. BTW, Greg Meriwether is a reporter for WAFB.

22) Comment by spqr - 07/03/2013

Cousin Dave, the media has to ask what they can when they can as Satan, uh, Piyush Jindal, is rarely in the state to answer questions and, when he is in Louisiana, often does not field questions. They caught Lucifer at a rare time and have the obligation to ask. In the end, the Evil One continues to prove his disdain for the state's populace. ...as for the jobs coming to BR, more low-skill wages for the region akin to Walmart and call centers. We lost a Fortune 500 company last week. Was that addressed at the press conference?

23) Comment by tball - 07/03/2013

It's G. Bush's fault.

24) Comment by Mr. T - 07/03/2013

If Gov. Jindal realized how wealthy the Bayou Corne folks are, he would have visited them a long time ago. We all know how much he likes rich white folks. By the way, morellok2, who is Greg Meriwether?

25) Comment by morellok2 - 06/03/2013

Cousin Dave, If you look a little ways down in the list of articles you will see the article about the facility being expanded by a Belgian company to bag up plastics produced by other companies and send them to NO to be shipped to other markets. Sounds like lots of packing up and shipping-not many skilled jobs and of course we taxpayers are footing the bill for training and other incentives. This story is at top of list since more recent. Congratulations to Greg Meriweather for asking the question and continuing to try to get the governor so answer the question rather than repeating his talking points.

26) Comment by Cousin Dave - 06/03/2013

So these stupid questions came up during a press conference about a Baton Rouge business project? Gee, would it be too much to ask what the project is, and what it will mean to our economy? Instead, this article focuses exclusively on off-subject that Gov. jindal refused to answer a bunch.

27) Comment by markedwardmarchiafava - 06/03/2013

Why do some people think the government has to hold their hand every step of the way? Why can't you people handle your own problems? Y'all act like Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin.

28) Comment by jwarren - 06/03/2013

Do those selfish people living near the sinkhole really expect Jindal to take time off from campaigning around the country to come visit them? How dare they!
