Vitter files immigration bills

Sen. David Vitter filed a slate of immigration-related bills Wednesday, while continuing his opposition to “comprehensive immigration reform” pushed by the Senate’s so-called “Gang of Eight.”

Vitter’s proposals range from offering more visas to those who earn doctorates in the U.S. to more extreme changes that would end automatic citizenship for babies born in the country.

The Gang of Eight, which includes Republicans such as Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and John McCain, R-Ariz., are pushing for comprehensive reform that includes expanded border security and what they call a rigorous potential path to citizenship for the nation’s illegal immigrants.

But Vitter, R-La., and Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., teamed up Wednesday to argue that they fear any such plan will focus on amnesty with promises for increased border security that are not backed up.

They point to the 1986 immigration reform signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, which they say did not bring as much as was promised in terms of border security.

“That model hasn’t worked before,” Vitter said. “In fact, it’s failed horribly.”

Referring to the numbers of illegal immigrants now compared with 1986, Vitter added: “We want to solve the problem. We don’t want to perpetuate it, much less quadruple it.”

Vitter wants to focus on what he called his “targeted, step-by-step approach” of individual bills before even considering amnesty or an accelerated path to citizenship.

The new bills Vitter is filing include:

  • The STEM Jobs Act of 2013 to make up to 55,000 visas available to qualified immigrants who have doctoral degrees in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics from a U.S. college.
  • The Birthright Citizenship Act preventing the children of illegal immigrants from gaining automatic citizenship unless one of the parents is a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident or a member of the U.S. armed forces.
  • Child tax credit legislation to close loopholes to prevent illegal immigrants from claiming tax credits for their children.
  • Sanctuary cities legislation to prohibit federal funds from being distributed to cities that Vitter said encourage and provide safe harbor for illegal immigrants.
  • The Voter Integrity Protection Act that would make it an aggravated felony and deportable offense when an illegal immigrant attempts to vote in the U.S.
  • U.S.-VISIT legislation to fully implement the U.S. VISIT check-in and check-out system.

Vitter also is co-sponsoring legislation by U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, to expand the E-Verify system for verifying employee eligibility.

Dictionary.com ILLEGAL alien noun - a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization. A foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, especially a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson. You can call an illegal alien Peter Pan for all I care and he can be any color of the rainbow, but, it's still against the law to overstay your visa or to cross the border without approval. If anyone knows an illegal alien, just drop them off all a liberal's house. They would be glad to take care of them, along with all their families, since our country has no money.

And I love this one :•The Voter Integrity Protection Act that would make it an aggravated felony and deportable offense when an illegal immigrant attempts to vote in the U.S." So if I dont try to vote but im illegal its NOT a deportable offense? I though jsut be undocumented was deportable in and of itself. Thas what happens when you let aides write frivolous legislation as quickly as possible to score some headlines and win some points with the 'cranks, haters, and bigots' (TM, Republican Party Leadership) down home.

BRmoderate, No thanks, buddy. Now, if you have mountain in Tennessee with a nice two storied log cabin home and a huge barn and a fully stocked three acre pond with 6-7 lb. bass and 6 lb. blue channel catfish and some pasture land with pecan, Asian pear and peach orchards and loads of muscadine vines, we might have a deal. LOL!!

doesnt vitter know that his birthright citizenship act is unconstitutional and clearly violates the 14th amendment. when you focus on the 5th as much as he has had to, then i guess its understandable why you might be unfamiliar with the rest! what a class act. the escorts even asked for him by name!

jedleland, I wish every South Korean could move here until Obama keeps his 2008 promise t that he would “eliminate North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and stop Kim Jong Un from blowing up Seoul. And speaking Korean is fun, but this is America. They wouldn't dare impose on us to learn their language.

All these bills are excellent. Thank you, Senator Vitter.

maybe if those 12 million illegals express remorse for their act, admit to their god and savior that they made a mistake, and seek forgiveness from their friends and loved ones, then they'll all get a pass, every last one of them. Thats all it took for Vitter to get a pass on his illegal and unlawful acts. Has he seen the inside of a court room yet? dont think so. Surely whats good for the goose and all that. I look foward to a full measure of support on this usgegstion from all and any of our regressive heavy-browed tea party friends who have so forgiven Vitter his trespasses and not insisted that he actually suffer any penalty of the laws he broke. Oh, wait, hes a white american republican - different case entirely!

David Vitter - thats a stand up guy there .loves him some prostitutes, though. Isnt that an illegal act, an actual crime?

@Whatnow...I'll give you that travel trailer if you give me that land for the AP-LP highway..... :)

14) Comment by DMJ - 14/02/2013

It's not a "crime" anyway. Simply being undocumented in the United States is not a criminal offense.

15) Comment by Whatnow - 14/02/2013

And overstaying their visas is against the law. I want a huge travel trailer, but I can't always get what I want. But, I guess stealing it won't matter. It's just a stupid law. Plus, if I don't get caught, it's not a crime, right?

16) Comment by DMJ - 14/02/2013

What opponents of "amnesty" always forget to mention is the fact that 40% of "illegals" came here legally but, thanks to the completely antiquated system of legal immigration we have in the U.S., overstayed their visas. They don't want to be illegal, but they don't want to leave the U.S., which is now their home. They have roots in the community. They have jobs. They have children who grew up here. Also, we have a maximum number of visas we grant people, no matter what country they come from. In other words, Mexico gets the same # as Estonia. This fixed, arbitrary number is not based on demand...or in reality, really. "Get in line!!" they say. Sure... and wait 20 years? It's absurd.

I did misread that and I humbly apologize. But, his grandparents should have been either deported or charged. Becoming legal themselves, they knew the rules better than most. They intentionally harbored an illegal alien. He overstayed his Visa. That is against the law. His grandparents knew this and also failed to follow the law to work toward citizenship for him. They evidently didn't have legal custody and so did nothing. Even when Vargas was old enough to apply for citizenship and work toward it, he did nothing and used false documents including a green card, Filipino passport, and a driver’s license that helped him to avoid deportation which is a felony. He is not only an illegal alien, he is an criminal. I also blame this on the State Department for never checking on his Visa nor his whereabouts. Illegal immigrants are accountable to no one. Our borders are wide open to anyone and that includes terrorists and criminals.

18) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 14/02/2013

whatnow, the fact of the matter is that Mr Vargas' grandparents were legal immigrants. His mother sent him over on a Visa. So you are saying his grandparents, legal immigrants, should be deported? its hard to debatesomeone who is allergic to facts.

19) Comment by BRmoderate - 14/02/2013

I agree with Whatnow that illegal immigrants should not be able to enter this country and receive automatic social assistance from medicaid, food stamps...etc... Let's build those provisions into the gang of eight's proposal. I love bipartisan efforts to solve problems. We must address the fact that we have illegal immigrants working in the USA. We must make employers more accountable for hiring them and we must get immigrants paying taxes. A rigorous path to citizenship seems like a great answer.

Sorry... no will... willing.

21) Comment by Whatnow - 14/02/2013

DMJ, I'm will to bet that if Americans were allowed to vote on this, the illegals would lose. Our country is in financial trouble as it is. We have more people on the food stamp roles than ever and this will only add millions more. How do you suggest that our country pay for this? TS, his family should have been deported long ago. They came here illegally. They come here illegally for the money, but don't respect our laws and our country enough to become citizens. Try that in any other country in the world. The only people who profit from all of this is politicians. I'm just glad that Vitter is not one of them. To have an illegal stand before our Congress and tell them what to do is a slap in the face to every American and every legal who did things by the law. Amnesty is not the answer.

22) Comment by DMJ - 14/02/2013

The STEM Jobs Act seems good. The rest....not so much. Keep digging that hole, Vitter. David "The John" Vitter is making himself more popular in his own state (pointlessly) while sacrificing the popularity of the GOP in the rest of the country. You guys feel good about that?

23) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 14/02/2013

I guess Jose Antonio Vargas, the "illegal" in question, should have 'self deported' at age 16 when he discovered he wasn't an american citizen when he went to get a drivers license? I know what Jesus would say: " kick his lazy tail out of the USofA, the greatest christian nation in the world"...RIGHT?

Vitter is a self-righteous idiot. He is as concerned about the people of Louisiana and the USA as Jindal.

Before Congress an illegal immigrant told them "“When you inaccurately call me illegal, you not only dehumanize me, you’re offending them,” (his parents) he said. “No human being is illegal.” Well, I guess we'll just call you a criminal. Or we can deport you and won't have to call you anything. And senor, it's not inaccurate to call you an illegal. I guess that's like calling drug dealers un-incensed pharmacists. How come all the other countries get to have borders? Go Vitter, go! I hope you get enough support, although with so many politicians wanting that voting block, I think it's doomed. in EVERY other country aliens are treated as criminals...or spies.
