BR man accused
of bingo money theft

A Baton Rouge man has been arrested for allegedly stealing bingo money over the holidays and falsifying paperwork.

Pepino D. Thomas, 47, 12400 Jefferson Highway, was booked Monday on counts of filing false public records, a felony, and misdemeanor theft, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

A state Department of Revenue agent received a tip that Thomas had not run bingo sessions he reported having on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, according to the affidavit.

“An audit of paperwork submitted by Mr. Thomas for the two fake sessions revealed that he stole $145 from the Christmas Eve session and $284 from the New Year’s Eve session,” the affidavit says.

Thomas met with State Police and admitted to the thefts and false paperwork, the affidavit says.

Port Allen man dies
after crash on Essen

A 60-year-old Port Allen man involved in a traffic crash Tuesday morning on Essen Lane died shortly after the crash because of a heart condition, Baton Rouge police said.

Ralph Jackson was driving south in the 5000 block of Essen at11 a.m. when he lost control of his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado and crossed into the north inside lane, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said in a news release.

Jackson was headed toward Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center with extreme chest pains, McKneely said.

Jackson struck a 2002 Ford F-250, McKneely said. The F-250 then crossed into the north outside lane and was rear-ended by a 2004 Ford F-150, he said.

The F-250 then left the roadway and struck a 2004 GMC Sierra that had stopped on Margaret Ann Avenue, McKneely said.

Jackson died at the scene from his heart condition, McKneely said. He did not die because of the accident, McKneely said.

Two other people, whose identities were not released, were transported to the Lake with minor injuries, McKneely said.

This crash is still under investigation, he said.
