Authorities are trying to determine whether a dog fight featured in a video posted to Facebook Monday happened in Tangipahoa Parish or Lafayette Parish.
The man who posted the video online, Kendrick Drummond, has an Amite address but listed his location as Lafayette on his Facebook
profile, Tangi Humane Society director Randy Stegall said Wednesday.
Drummond’s profile has since been deleted.
The video is extremely graphic, showing two dogs viciously fighting as spectators cheer them on and yell things like “he gonna take that ear off.”
The condition of the dogs is unknown.
The Humane Society began investigating the incident Tuesday after receiving emails and messages from concerned people who had seen the video online, Stegall said.
The organization is working with the Lafayette Police Department, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and State Police to identify people in the video and match scenery in the video to a location so that warrants can be issued, he said.
Lafayette law enforcement officers potentially have identified one of the people seen in the video, Stegall said, and investigators have received a cellphone believed to have been used by Drummond but registered to someone in Lafayette.
“Once we ID one of them and get them pulled, we’ll probably get the rest of them,” Stegall said. “These are felony charges, so somebody’s bound to start talking.”
State law makes it a felony to operate, promote, profit from or attend a dog fight.
Violations are punishable by a fine of between $1,000 and $25,000 and/or one to 10 years in prison.
Proving dog-fighting cases can be difficult, Stegall said. “I don’t like losing a case, especially one like this.
“I just can’t see what people get out of it,” Stegall said. “It’s a pretty gruesome video.”
