Bail denied for Walker man accused of killing baby during attack on wife

LIVINGSTON — Bail for Jeffery Reynolds, the Walker man accused of attacking his pregnant wife and killing the child she was carrying, was revoked Monday by 21st Judicial District Judge Brenda Ricks.

Reynolds has been held in the Livingston Parish Jail since his Oct. 23 arrest on counts of first-degree feticide, attempted second-degree murder and battery on a police officer.

Walker police and Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested Reynolds at his 30259 Milton Road home, where he allegedly had attacked his wife, Paula Reynolds. She survived the attack.

Jeffery Reynolds, 31, had been held in lieu of $500,000 bail. Ricks ruled in favor of a request from Assistant District Attorney Charlotte Herbert to deny Reynolds bail because he could pose a threat to Paula Reynolds and others in the community.

Herbert noted a letter Jeffery Reynolds sent to Patricia “Patty” Cook, the mother of Paula Reynolds.

Fighting back tears, Cook testified Monday that in mid-November she received a long letter from Jeffery Reynolds saying that if he could raise bail, he would leave Louisiana and go to Florida. In the letter, Cook testified, Reynolds wrote that if he remained in Louisiana, “someone might try to kill me.”

Cook testified that she has been the caretaker for her daughter during her long recovery from the attack. Cook also identified the infant as “baby Isaac.”

Herbert, who did not read the letter aloud, entered the document into the court record.

Defense attorney Barry Pike told Ricks he did not see how the letter could be construed as a threat. Pike, a public defender, suggested the state had created conditions that made Jeffery Reynolds fear for his life.

Pike said Reynolds has been held in solitary confinement since his Oct. 23 arrest, and on the rare occasions when he is allowed to leave his cell, he is made to wear a bullet-proof vest and is accompanied by several deputies.

“Because of this forced isolation and the constant lockdown, Jeffery Reynolds had to think that he was being threatened and his life was in danger, and not the other way around,” Pike argued.

The hearing opened with testimony from Livingston Parish sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Beatty, who said he arrived at the Reynolds home shortly after 11 a.m.

While driving to the home, Beatty testified, he heard Jeffery Reynolds on a 911 call threaten Paula Reynolds and subsequently heard screams from the victim and partially incoherent ranting from Jeffery Reynolds.

Reynolds, Beatty said, admitted he had smoked some “herbal incense.”

Beatty testified that he saw that Paula Reynolds’ torso had been “cut open” and that her baby was still attached by the umbilical cord.

Others on the scene removed the baby, and wrapped it in a blanket and placed it on a couch, he said. The baby was already dead, Beatty said.

The deputy also testified that when he interviewed Jeffery Reynolds later in the day at the parish detention center, Reynolds again mentioned he had smoked herbal incense and had started “having visions” before the incident.

At the hearing’s conclusion, Ricks set the next set of preliminary hearings for April 8, when she will hear any additional motions from the prosecution and the defense.

No trial date has been set.

compare those gun totin' yahoos for jesus with a real time example of how a real christian conducts herself: This from Minneapolis:A mother whose only child was shot dead has shown the ultimate forgiveness - by inviting her son's killer to live next door. Mary Johnson, 59, now lives in the apartment adjoining the home of 34-year-old Oshea Israel and they share a porch. In February 1993, Mrs Johnson's son, Laramiun Byrd, 20, was shot in the head by 16-year-old Israel after an argument at a party in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Israel, who was involved with drugs and gangs, was tried as an adult and sentenced to 25 and a half years. He served 17 before being released. He now lives back in the neighbourhood where he grew up - next door to the mother of the young man he murdered. Mrs Johnson said she originally wanted justice and to see Israel locked up for what he had done. She said: 'My son was gone. I was angry and hated this boy, hated his mother. '[The murder] was like a tsunami. Shock. Disbelief. Hatred. Anger. Hatred. Blame. Hatred. I wanted him to be caged up like the animal he was.' She decided to found a support group and counselled mothers whose children had been killed and encouraged them to reach out to the families of their murderers, who were victims of another kind. 'Hurt is hurt, it doesn't matter what side you are on,' she said. Then just a few years ago, the 59-year-old teacher and devout Christian, asked if she could meet Israel at Minnesota's Stillwater state prison. She said she felt compelled to see if there was a way in which she could forgive her son's killer. At first he refused but then nine months later, changed his mind. Israel said he was shocked by the fact she wanted to meet him. He said: 'I believe the first thing she said to me was, ''Look, you don't know me. I don't know you. Let's just start with right now.'' 'And I was befuddled myself.' The pair met regularly after that. When Israel was released from prison around 18 months ago, Mrs Johnson introduced him to her landlord - who with her blessing, invited Israel to move into the building. Mrs Johnson and Israel are now close friends, a situation that she puts down to her strong religious beliefs but says she also has a selfish motive. She said: 'Unforgiveness is like cancer. It will eat you from the inside out. 'It's not about that other person, me forgiving him does not diminish what he's done. Yes, he murdered my son - but the forgiveness is for me.' Mary Johnson even wears a necklace with a two-sided locket - on one side are photos of herself and her son; the other has a picture of Israel. Israel admits he still struggles with the extraordinary situation he finds himself in. He said: 'I haven't totally forgiven myself yet, I'm learning to forgive myself. And I'm still growing toward trying to forgive myself.' Israel now hopes to prove himself to the mother of the man he killed. He works at a recycling plant during the day and goes to college at night. He says he's determined to payback Mrs Johnson's clemency by contributing to society. He visits prisons and churches to talk about forgiveness and reconciliation. Mrs Johnson often joins him and they tell their story together. He added: 'A conversation can take you a long way. Now, compare that with the dopes that plague these pages every day worshipping their firearms and their money (taxed enough already!) and the bile spewed over every story about crime or inner city violence, and the persecution of our law abiding gay neighbours, and the paranoia about government takeovers. noone said being a christain was easy, least of all jesus. but dont you at some point have to actually make some sort of effort? next time you feel that false pride well up, coupled with righteous indignation over a black on black crime, or gun control, or gay marriage, or benghazi or fast and furious or obamas birth certificate, read this story and see what an actual christain is. and if you dont think you can follow this same example, for she is only a simple woman of modest means, then shut your holy yap.

thanks! christains are supposed to ask themselves, WWJD? its clear what he would do cause we know what he is supposed to have done - lived a nonmaterial life, encouraged service to the poor and condemned and despised, spurned wealth or its accumulation, promoted collectivism, loved his enemies, forgave his killers, embraced nonviolence and peace in all its forms even when persecuted or attacked, mercy for all gods children, even those that might trespass against us. do i need to go on? now go back to the advocate home page, look at the story about assault weapons on th left hand side, and read the comments by our christain brethren (posting phone numbers and addressses of the lawyer in question, claiming themselves 'true americans' as if there are untrue ones, espousing arming themselve to the teeth, indulging in paranoid fantasies of armed resistance against a ficticious government assault and so on) then look at the comments that accompanied the boy scouts story. then look at the comments that accompanied the stroy about the execution scheduled for ash wednesday. then look at teh comments that accompanied the story about the black youths rioting int he mall. then look at the comments that accompany any story about inner city schools or public education. then reread Matthew 5. then tell me WWJD? hang out with these clowns? Hmmm.

Anyone care to get back on topic? I think it's great that this man was denied bail. Now we can get on with the trial. IF he is found to be guilty, I hope the punishment is severe enough that he will never be a free citizen again.

Jedleland: BRAVO. Just remember that you're not dealing with ordinary stupid here. You're dealing with Louisiana stupid. It's a breed unto itself.

5) Comment by jedleland - 05/02/2013

of course actually living those words would mean giving up your weapons (turning the other cheek) not taking glee in the execution of condemned inmates (mercy), not wishing it could take place more often, with you at the switch (yes mercy), not persecuting people who happen to be born different than yourself (or if you like made by an infallible and perfect god differently), and perhaps expressing the love of jesus through something other than judgment, vengeance, exclusion, condemntation or other OT-style methodologies. something like, oh i dont know, love?

you know for some reason, over the last thirty years or so, far right conservative christains, the 'religious right' have earned a reputation as intolerant bible thumps, hatemongers, and judgmental ignoramuses. i read the comments most days by our republican christian friends on topics like boy scouts or crime, or bus routes, or abortion of gay people or black people and i realise the blame lies with - the librul media!

That corner the fundamentalists insist on painting themselves into only gets tighter. If in doubt, blame satan! More thoughtful theologians who don’t cling to literalism, fundamentalism, or any other ism, have no problem with these inconsistencies. They recognize nuance, myth, allegory, when they see it. Only an idiot would take each and every instance as literal truth, as actual history. Its only the far right ideologies and ultra religious conservatives that struggle with bridging these unbridgeable gaps, to their own discredit. As it stands, you have a god outside space and time who kills babies and tells other people to kill babies. He does it out of vengeance and jealousy. Messy and ugly stuff. So presumably the sin of abortion that mark warns us against will be punished with…god killing babies, his preferred method. Of course there is nothing in the new testament that corrects any of this, that’s just a cop out. The old testament is a collection of Hebrew history and folklore, the new testament is more a personal guide of conduct for humans, mixed with some history and folklore. Nowhere does jesus say sorry for all the baby killing in the OT. Ironically he does offer a new set of values for his followers that are based on mercy and forgiveness but as any reader of these posts or any visitor to an evangelical megachurch or teaparty meeting knows, that spirit is rejected by his followers in favor of OT style judgment and damnation. its just very selective (hence the term cafeteria Christians, prevalent in these parts) so you have the farce of ‘ivy’ suggesting I read the NT as an antidote to the grim anger of the OT god, while every other topic open for comment is given the full OT treatment by our right wing bible thump crowd be it gleeful eye for an eye (any and all capital punishment stories), or gay persecution, or (in times not so far past ) racial segregation, female subordination, and general douchery. I didn’t write any of those quotes, just pasted them from some book called the bible. Its full of baby killing and vengeance and yes abortion. And the OT god (who is presumably the same as the NT one) is an enthusiastic killer of innocent babies. Of course, if I were to reject that I would also have to reject the bits that let you persecute gay people, or other racial groups, or women, right? Those are in the OT too. But that’s not so popular amongst your typical far right congregation. GOP jesus wants you to bully gay kids, as he would do, right? Is irony completely lost on the conservative mind? You r god has killed more babies, and with greater glee, than every abortion doctor can or will ever manage. Its there in black and white and every word is inerrant and actual factual history. I know. A fundamentalist told me so.

Ivy, ivy, ivy, then why is the Old Testament still a prt of the "good" book? Leave it to a christian to pick and choose which portions of the bible he should follow.

Jedleland, Jedleland, Jedleland. There, I wrote it 3 times, so you should go up in smoke after reading it. It does not appear that MEM is a Christian, though. You got your information from the Old Testament, which, frankly, if that's all I had to go by, I would be hard pressed to remain a southern Baptist. Read the NT and get back to us.

11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’” 13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for[a] the Lord, the son born to you will die.” 15 After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill. 16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth[b] on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died.

23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.

Exodus:12:29-30 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13 so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14 and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure— 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah[a] of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing. 16 “‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse[b] among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.
