Truck driver killed in crash Truck driver killed in crash FLORIDA PARISHES BUREAU| Aug. 03, 2011 Comments PONCHATOULA — A truck driver was killed after the 18-wheeler he was driving was struck by another 18-wheeler early Tuesday morning near Ponchatoula, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police Troop L. John Nelson, 53, of Westwego, had stopped on the southbound shoulder of Interstate 55 around 2:30 a.m., Trooper Nick Manale said in the release. Nelson pulled off the shoulder and began to travel southbound at a low speed when he was struck by another 18-wheeler driven by Jimmy Bennett, 59, of Florence, Miss., Manale says. The trailer of Nelson’s truck was pushed forward into the cab and Nelson was trapped in the driver’s seat, Manale says. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, Manale says. Nelson was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was not suspected, according to the release. Bennett sustained minor injuries in the crash and submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no signs of alcohol in his system, the release says. The crash remains under investigation, the release says.
