High water closes Ascension’s Alligator Bayou Road

High water remaining in Ascension Parish from the heavy rainfall that fell in Louisiana starting two weeks ago will close Alligator Bayou Road until further notice.

Officials with the parish’s East Ascension Consolidated Gravity Drainage District No. 1 announced Tuesday that the road will be closed at the Frog Bayou Lock at 7 a.m. Friday.

Drainage Department crews will be installing and operating three pumps on the Ascension Parish side of Alligator Bayou Road to help drain the Bluff Swamp area into Bayou Manchac, parish officials said in a news release. The pumps will be located near the Frog Bayou Lock. The increased water level in the basin was due to heavy rains experienced during the last two weeks.

Officials said the work would take approximately two weeks to complete, but the closure will remain in effect until the water in the Bluff Swamp basin lowers to a safe level.
