Our Views: Reid, Vitter spar on storm

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said a really dumb thing recently when he told fellow senators that Hurricane Katrina was “nothing in comparison” to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. We’re glad that Reid later apologized for those remarks, which were made as Reid urged lawmakers to approve a disaster aid package for Sandy victims.

We’ll take Reid at his word that he didn’t mean to say what he said. His suggestion that Sandy caused more damage than Katrina was obviously untrue. Katrina killed more than 1,800 people and caused more than $100 billion in damage. Sandy took the lives of about 250 people and caused an estimated $60 billion to $80 billion in damage.

We can understand why U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., was upset by Reid’s comments. Even so, we don’t think Vitter helped matters by calling Reid an idiot because of what Reid said. “Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents,” Vitter said.

Vitter’s characterization of Reid will no doubt prove popular here in Louisiana, where Katrina’s destruction continues to resonate. We certainly agree that Reid’s comments were deplorable, but Vitter’s name-calling is beneath the dignity of a U.S. senator. Such comments don’t help advance the kind of cooperation that’s needed on Capitol Hill.

We hope that Reid and Vitter can put this matter behind them and focus on the real work required of Congress.

exagerated, a new form of just plain snarly. Reid lost his pissing contest.

Reid was speaking for badly needed relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and he exagerated. Vitter called him on it. Big deal! That's just usual Vitter behavior. I don't like him, and I haven't liked him for many years, and for many reasons. But, this is small potatoes.

from a young Ted Kennedy to Anthony Weiner a number of democrats , including a sitting president , have demonstrated the left is not immune to indiscretion .

Nope, because I believe Vitter and not Clinton. And to think I voted for Clinton, too. Clinton should have been impeached for it. He lied under oath and caused world wide embarrassment to our country. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/special_report/1998/clinton_scandal/49771.stm

Hypocrites? You mean like voting for someone who routinely spouts off about family values and the sanctity of marriage while cheating on your wife with a high-priced call girl? Hmmm.. And yes, what Clinton did was bad as well, but the GOP tried to impeach him for it, whereas they (you) aided in Vitter's re-election. This is a new level of double standard. Look...just asmit it... as long as someone votes the way you want them to, all else is forgiveable. Right?

Vitter really shouldn't have called Reid, an idiot! That was an insult to regular old everyday idiots.....

7) Comment by Whatnow - 01/09/2013

No, he didn't run either, but how many of you would have voted for him? You sure didn't mind that he was "running" for Obama, did you? But, the left and Dems jumping on Vitter for his morals and not Clinton's makes you hypocrites.

This is bout right for "The Advocate" Reid insults Louisiana apologizes and is forgiven by "The Advocate", Vitter stands up for Louisiana and is taken to task by "The Advocate".

Didn't Clinton practice adultery? But, that's okay, he's a Democrat.

Sorry, jdk944, my comment wasn't meant for you, it was meant for lovemykids.

jdk944, read again. "Reid lied about Romney being a tax cheat which is a federal crime and sullying the Mormon religion." Reid was lying about Romney sullying the Mormon religion. Yes, Reid is a Mormon, but I guess Democrat Mormons can lie and it's alright.

Harry Reid can apologize by stepping out of office and moving to North Korea where he belongs.

Good thing Vitter isn't secretary of state

This is why we shouldn't vote for Mormons for public office. Just kidding....kind of....

Apparently LA voters are impressed with Vitter, which does not speak well for LA voters.>>>>For example, approval of Vitter's behavior in this case seems justified by the idea: two wrongs make a right. Further, Vitter assumes forgiveness for evidence of adultery but won't forgive Reid's hyperbole, otherwise known as political rhetoric.>>>>I don't like Reid at all but approve of his apology. So, if this were the only evidence on which I would cast my vote, it would go to Reid, not Vitter.>>>>In fact, I doubt I would ever vote for Vitter.

^ I'm not sure the purpose behind comparing the 2 storms anyway. What does it matter which was worse? I really felt like Sandy got way more attention/publicity just because it hit the Northeast as opposed to the South. Maybe that's what this is all about.

"idiot" - a person affected with extreme mental retardation/ a foolish or stupid person. Sometimes the truth hurts.

20) Comment by rgeraldwallace@cox.net - 01/09/2013

Reid is not a gentleman, not a scholar, nor is he honorable. He lies constantly, demonizes, and mischaracterizes anything or anyone that doesn't prostrate themselves at his feet and misuses the power of the Senate to advance his agenda. His behavior is that of a powerful cretin

21) Comment by agagent - 01/09/2013

Vitter should apologize for calling the idiot an idiot. After all the idiot was only trying to ram through billions in wasteful government spending in the relief bill. Why didn't the editorial writers mention that?

22) Comment by jdk944 - 01/09/2013

@lovemykids - look up the word forgiveness, you might learn something!! Or are YOU the only one who has never sinned or without sin? I THINK NOT!

23) Comment by jdk944 - 01/09/2013

Senator Reid can best be described as one who continually misspeaks. Thus saying your "sorry" becomes hollow words.

24) Comment by lovemykids - 01/09/2013

Whatnow, isn't Reid a Mormon? If he is sullying the Mormon religion, what has Vitter done for his religion? Can anyone say prostitution and adultery?

25) Comment by Elderly Man - 01/09/2013

Senator Reid is a gentleman and a scholar. He apologized. Senator Vitter is an obscene, obnoxious little man without dignity or class. He makes a negative impression. He disgraces our state.

It was okay when Reid lied about Romney being a tax cheat which is a federal crime and sullying the Mormon religion. But, I don't care what party Reid is in, he's a evil minded lying, cheating little weasel. He has gotten away with his trash mouth too many times. I'm just glad it was a Louisiana boy that nailed him right back. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say it. " Bullnoogies, but you did say it so you must have meant it. He's not a two year old learning cuss words for the first time. Advocate, your party bias is really obvious. Try to tone it down, okay?
