Dead, malnourished horse found near BR airport

East Baton Rouge Parish animal control officials are investigating the discovery Monday of a dead, malnourished horse on Metro Airport property.

Animal Control Director Hilton Cole said the 700-pound or so black horse appeared severely malnourished, to the point of emaciation.

The horse, a gelding, looked 300 pounds or so under weight, Cole said.

Cole said he thinks the horse was already dead when it was dropped off on the property. He said animal control officers looked for a gunshot wound but found none.

The horse had a micro chip placed inside that has connected the horse to a previous owner in the Tangipahoa Parish area, Cole said.

“Of course we don’t know at this point when that person owned the horse. It could have been a year ago or three weeks ago. The horse could have been stolen,” Cole said.

Cole said the horse was discovered by Metro Airport police officers who then called Cole.

Cole said the horse was found with its rear legs tied and it appeared the horse had been pushed off the back of a truck.

Airport police officers found the horse in the middle of a portion of old Plank Road, which is now owned by the airport.

An investigation into what happened to the horse and how it got there is under way, Cole said.

Did you even read the article, CA? The horse's rear legs were tied together. They don't typically wander around like that. There is clearly a horse abuser in the area.

This is news? Any chance the horse wandered off of its property and ended up dead at BTR? Or is there a horse abuser out there dumping horses at the airport?

I sure hope CitizensArrest doesn't own any animals, I would hate to see the conditions they are kept in and how they are treated.

CitizensArrest: "YES" this is news. Also read the article, it clearly states the horse's rear legs were tied and it was pushed or pulled off a trailer, I can guarantee you this, they didn't push 700lbs of dead weight, so that means it was tied to something. As a former horse owner this saddens me. I also know full well East Baton Rouge Parish animal control officials will do nothing if/when they find the person responsible. All one has to do is drive around EBR and they will see many horses keep in small pens, no grass, hay, little feed, hoofs not trimmed, and I would be willing to bet no current coggins. The other problem is, if you report this to East Baton Rouge Parish animal control officials they will tell the person who contacted them who made the complaint, now me, I could care less, but I know a lot of people who do, for that very reason they look the other way.

Citizens, do you ever read the article? Or just spew filth based on headlines designed to instigate people?
