Deputies seek two in robbery at Wal-Mart
East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s detectives are looking for two men who robbed customers leaving the Wal-Mart store at 3132 College Drive about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said late Thursday.
The suspects, one armed with a handgun, approached the victims as they were getting into their car and demanded money and goods, Hicks said in a news release. After taking several items of value, the men fled on foot, she said.
One of the robbers was described as a thin black male, wearing a dark-colored jacket, light pants, white tennis shoes, and a black or dark blue winter cap with ear flaps. The other was described as a stocky built black male, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, light pants, and dark shoes, Hicks said.
Both suspects appear to be in their late teens, the release states.

Woman suspected
in stabbing arrested
A Luling woman accused in November of stabbing someone in the neck during an argument in a Baton Rouge home has been arrested, according to an affidavit warrant.
Carolyn Brown, 47, 1337 Paul Fredrick St., was booked Wednesday by Baton Rouge police on one count of attempted second-degree murder, East Baton Rouge Parish Prison records show.
According to the warrant, Brown stabbed the victim during an argument at a home she was then sharing with the victim at 5543 Washington St. The victim had to have surgery because of a nicked artery, according to the warrant.
Witnesses told police Brown stabbed the victim.
TV thief caught on security cameras
East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies are searching for a thief caught on security cameras at the Wal-Mart in Central stealing 42-inch flat-screen TVs twice in late December, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
The thefts occurred Dec. 21 and Dec. 30. Both times the thief smuggled a screwdriver and pliers stuffed in his pants into the store, and used them to pry open a fire escape door in the garden center where he grabbed the television and left through the open door, spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.
Deputies said he is a thin, white man between 25 and 30 years old with light brown hair and a gold cap on one of his top teeth. He wore a light-colored baseball cap with a “3” on it, the release says.
Ex-sheriff’s staffer booked with battery
A former East Baton Parish Sheriff’s detective was arrested and booked into Parish Prison on Thursday afternoon on one count of domestic abuse battery after he allegedly physically abused his live-in girlfriend in December while drinking, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
Michael Abernathy, 35, was terminated as a result of the investigation, spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.
Detectives observed several bruises on the victim’s body and eyes that corroborated her statements, the release says.
Abernathy worked for 13 years in Parish Prison and uniform patrol before working recently as a detective in armed robbery and burglary, the release says.
6 booked with DWI in EBR Parish Prison
Authorities arrested at least six people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, booking records show.
Those booked and the counts against them:
- Calvin Brown, 56, 1139 Leavitt, Flossmoor, Ill., first-offense DWI and failure to signal/improper turn.
- Shannon Furr, 28, 1101 Lott Smith Road, Wesson, Miss., first-offense DWI and improper lane usage.
- Annalese Kaiser, 23, 967 River Road, Sunshine, first-offense DWI, reckless operation of a vehicle and failure to maintain control.
- Dijon Pickens, 26, 8825 GSRI Ave., first-offense DWI, driver’s license suspended/revoked and failure to maintain control.
- Carol Rector, 37, 2705 Millerville Road, first-offense DWI and improper lane usage.
- Gabriel Vince, 28, 17442 Lake Azalea Drive, first-offense DWI, hit-and-run, possession of alcohol in vehicle, driver’s license required, theft of goods, and theft of a motor vehicle.
