Looking North for Dec. 27

The Zachary Fire Department, working with the state Fire Marshal’s Office, will donate and install smoke detectors in Zachary homes for people who do not have them or cannot install them for some reason.

A grant application is available online at the fire marshal’s website, http://sfm.dps.louisiana.gov, under the Operation Save A Life tab. Anyone needing smoke alarms in their residence may turn in the application, or pick up one, at the Zachary fire station. The installation work will begin after the holidays.

Jazz concert postponed

The holiday jazz concert by Walter Perry and a collection of young and old musicians scheduled in Baker has been postponed to 6 p.m. Jan. 3 because of possible bad weather Friday night. The event next week will be in the Baker Municipal Auditorium, rain or shine.

Sponsored by the Baker Heritage Museum Commission, the free family concert will celebrate the holidays and the community.

Expertise needed

The Curriculum Committee for the Felicianas Chapter of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which is affiliated with LSU, meets Jan. 9 to discuss classes that will be offered in the Felicianas and Pointe Coupee for the summer and fall of 2013.

People with special talents and expertise are encouraged to propose classes before Jan. 9 that would interest people 50 and older, and anyone wishing to teach a class may send a proposal (350-word maximum) and a biography (150-word maximum) to Dr. Olivia Pass, P.O. Box 2877, St. Francisville, LA 70775 or email it to her at oliviapass@bellsouth.net.

Classes now include literature, art, history, yoga, foreign languages, science, and religion.

Pre-K roundup

The Zachary Early Learning Center will have its pre-kindergarten roundup from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 7, and parents of incoming pre-kindergarten students in the 2013-2014 school year are asked to participate in this early registration. The students must be 4 years old by Sept. 30.

Parents are asked to download a registration packet from the school website, http://www.zacharyelc.org. They also must bring the child’s birth certificate, Social Security account card, immunization record, four current items to prove residency and the $50 registration fee. For more information, call (225) 654-6011.

Band at inauguration

The West Feliciana High School band will be in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood on Jan. 21 for a music festival sponsored by the University of Maryland, and now, courtesy of Sen. David Vitter, R-La., the group will have 67 reserved seats to watch President Barack Obama take the oath of office for a second term, band Director Kelvin Jones said.

Sandy Hook support

Among the many tributes flooding into Newtown, Conn., were 150 works of student art from West Feliciana High School dubbed “Fleur de Hearts,” a design incorporating the school logo, a fleur-de-lis, and traditional heart shapes. Art teacher Killen G. Williams said art is a common form of therapy, useful in this case for students both at his school and Sandy Hook Elementary School.
