Smiley, who last year defeated Assessor Renee Mire Michel, will be sworn in at 11 a.m. during a ceremony in the Parish Council chambers on the second floor of the Ascension Parish Courthouse East Annex, 828 S. Irma Blvd.

N.O. battle talk set

Chuck Perrodin will discuss the Battle of New Orleans during a Jan. 10 program at the Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville

On Jan. 8, 1815, American forces led by Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson defeated invading British troops intent on seizing the vast territory the United States had acquired via the Louisiana Purchase. The Battle of New Orleans is widely regarded as the most important land victory of the War of 1812.

Perrodin’s “The Battle of New Orleans: How it Changed the Course of History” presentation will detail how this epic clash affected the future of both the nation and the rest of the world, a library news release states.

The program starts at 6 p.m., and advance registration is required.

To register, call (225) 473-8052.
