ANGOLA — A man accused of killing a woman after walking away from a work-release program hanged himself Friday in his cell at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, the West Feliciana Parish sheriff said.
Dustin Pleasant, 26, hanged himself with a blanket in Camp J on Friday about 3:45 p.m., Sheriff J. Austin Daniel said.
Pleasant had walked away from a work-release program near Lake Charles, Daniel said, while serving an eight-year sentence for aggravated assault on a peace officer.
On Nov. 30, while he was on the loose, Pleasant allegedly killed Brittany Grosse, a co-worker at a sports grill in Lake Charles, the American Press reported. Television station KPLC in Lake Charles reported that Grosse was Pleasant’s girlfriend.
After his arrest in Grosse’s death, Pleasant was sent to Angola pending court proceedings.
Daniel’s office investigated Pleasant’s suicide.
