Ex-LSU tennis coach sues over firing

Former longtime LSU women’s tennis coach Tony Minnis, who was fired earlier this year, filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the university Tuesday.

Minnis, who is black, joined LSU in 1992. LSU finished 11-13 this year, the third straight losing season for the team.

Minnis’ suit alleges he was subjected to “unwelcome race-based harassment and discrimination” throughout his employment at LSU.

The suit contends white coaches were paid up to $30,000 more than Minnis, and that he received “unjust evaluations and false letters of reprimand.”

Minnis repeatedly reported, protested and complained about the alleged illegal discrimination and harassment, to no avail, the suit adds.

He also opposed “inequitable treatment” of women’s athletics at LSU, the suit says.

“Mr. Minnis steadfastly fought for equality in women’s athletics only to discover he also was being subjected to inequity,” his attorney, Jill Craft, said Tuesday. “He, by standing up for his rights, is continuing to stand for vindication of the rights of all.”

Herb Vincent, LSU’s senior associate athletic director, said the university denies the allegations in the lawsuit.

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva is named as a defendant in the suit.

“Each time (Minnis) opposed unlawful discrimination/harassment and retaliation as well as ... gender inequities, he was chastised by the Defendants, belittled by Defendants, and threatened by Defendant Alleva that he would be terminated,” the suit alleges.

Alleva announced May 16 that LSU would not renew Minnis’ contract. The announcement came less than a week after the Lady Tigers lost their first-round match in the NCAA Tournament.

The suit says LSU refused to give Minnis any reason for his termination, putting him “under a significant cloud of suspicion.”

Minnis, who is not working, said Tuesday he has been asked during several job interviews, “What really happened at LSU? This doesn’t make sense.”

Minnis, 47, was replaced by Julia Sell. She came to LSU from the United States Tennis Association, where she served as the national coach of the regional training center in south Florida since August 2011. Prior to that stint, she was an assistant coach
at Notre Dame for three years.

Sell, a white female, is being paid “substantially more a year” than Minnis, his suit says.

The suit also names as defendants the LSU Board of Supervisors; Associate Athletic Director Eddie Nunez; and Miriam Segar, senior women’s administrator.

The suit was assigned to state District Judge Janice Clark.

Editor’s note: This article was changed on Nov. 21 to remove to tennis team’s record while Minnis was coach.

How is it that the USTA's player development department, seemingly, is always in the background when there is a discrimination against a black male tennis coach. I have experienced the very same thing on more than one occasion. In fact, I talked about it in my interview with former BleacherReport.com tennis writer Blaise Malley. My prediction is that LSU will settle out of court with him. They'll drag it out, and their lawyers will pester his lawyer to death with motions and depositions in an effort to clog up the works and bury her in paperwork, but in the end, they will realize it's cheaper to settle up with him and just make him go away.

You can bet your bottom-feeding dollar that he's going to win his case (of Judge Clark os going to GIVE him the verdict he needs to cash in).

T. Minnis got the coaching job 20 yrs. ago after playing at USL, his experience was a club Pro. Now LSU hires a N. Dame Asst. to lead the team. They had a chance to hire a former and only 3 time All-American player, but Alleva past over her. Also LSU does not have an indoor tennis facility like 99% of the SEC schools. He will be compensated!!!

People play the race card because it WORKS. When it comes to MONEY, the truth is not important-it is all about winning. This is the situation in America today and it is getting even more so. Racism is only bad when it adversely affects ME, otherwise it is a good thing and can be 'USED" to gain wealth and power. Like it or not, there is more racism practiced by so called 'minorities' than 'majorities' today and you really see it move into the 'pay back mode' when the 'minorities' become the 'majority' or gain the so called 'upper hand'. You are living in another world or watch to much TV if you can't see this going on all around us.

Tony Minnis may have been a nice dude. He may have loved LSU, yet he chose to play at USL. He is not and HAS NOT BEEN competitive in his league, the SEC. He also had three straight losing seasons. And it's a racially motivated dismissal, after he literally failed as a HC and vehemently criticized the AD? When a HC is blaming facilities and his/her record shows incompetence in his league, you can bet it is an appropriate dismissal. A recently retired and former revenue-losing HC made the same criticisms of her facilities, and she is now gone, ostensibly of her own accord. But the argument was the same and the program was waning. This Tennis HC's program was not only waning, it never really was competitive in the SEC.

Attila, you said it all before I could. You hit the nail on the head. If he was so unhappy, he should have gone on those interviews long before he got fired.

Wha's new? A black ;person gets fired and it is all because of racism. He was at LSU for 20 years and lo and behold he just realized that he was a "victim" of racism. Evidently LSU is racist because they finally stopped worrying about he inevitable charges of racism that they knew would be hurled at them for firing a person who, in their opinion, did not measure up to their expectations. He should consider himself lucky that they let him stay as long as they did..
