Reward offered in cat shootings

CLINTON — The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting deaths of several cats in Ethel.
The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which apparently happened in the vicinity of a residence on Butler Lane, off La. 995 West, during the weekend of Nov. 10-11, said Sgt. Kevin Garig.
Volunteers with the Northside Humane Society were caring for about 25 “community cats” and found several of them shot on Nov. 12, the national humane society said in a news release.
Garig said he also is investigating the circumstances under which the cats apparently were abandoned when the resident moved from the house where the cats were staying.
The news release says veterinarians who treated the animals said they were shot at close range by a .22-caliber weapon, primarily in their eyes or rectums.
At least four cats died as a result of their injuries.
Garig said the incident was reported to the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
