Kentwood motorcycle rider killed in wreck Kentwood motorcycle rider killed in wreck Advocate staff report Nov. 15, 2012 Comments A head-on collision between a pickup and a motorcycle Saturday morning on La. 38 near the St. Helena-Tangipahoa parish line left one man dead and another in jail facing prosecution on a count of vehicular homicide, Louisiana State Police reported. Around 10:30 a.m., Robert Morris, 51, of Kentwood, was driving east on La. 38 when his 2004 Chevrolet pickup entered the oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a 2012 Can-Am motorcycle driven by Elmus Welch, 70, of Kentwood, Trooper First Class Nick Manale said in a news release Saturday night. Welch, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office personnel, Manale said. Morris, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite for treatment of minor injuries. Manale said troopers believe Welch was not impaired, but do have reason to suspect Morris may have been impaired, so the State Police Crime Lab will conduct tests on blood samples taken from both men. Morris was booked into Tangipahoa Parish Jail on one count each of careless operation and vehicular homicide, Manale said.
